KUALA LUMPUR, 5 June 2026: AirAsia X (AirAsia Group*) categorically denies recent media reports claiming that the operations of its airline, Philippines AirAsia (flight code: Z2), are being grounded.

“These reports are entirely false and do not reflect the reality of the business or operations of the airline,” the airline group said in a statement released on Wednesday.

“All Z2 flights remain fully operational, with flights and services continuing as scheduled across the group’s network, subject to normal operational considerations such as weather and other standard factors affecting airline operations.”

AirAsia Group said it “views these coordinated and sensationalised reports as part of a deliberate smear campaign that has long been occurring, aimed at undermining fair competition in the Philippine aviation sector.

“Such narratives serve only the interests of those seeking to limit consumer choice and create conditions that could lead to a monopoly in the market. A monopoly benefits no one except the dominant market players. For travellers, it often results in reduced competition, fewer choices and significantly higher airfares.”

AirAsia Group Co-founder and Advisor Tony Fernandes commented: “AirAsia has long championed affordable travel and will continue to stand firmly against any development that harms consumers or restricts access to air connectivity. AirAsia carries almost seven million guests in the Philippines annually, and our commitment to the Philippines is absolute. We are deeply invested in the country, its people and its future. For over a decade, we have played a key role in democratising air travel, making flying affordable, fun and accessible to millions of Filipinos who might not otherwise have had the opportunity to fly. We have removed charges that people don’t want and made travel more flexible by offering ancillary options.

“Looking ahead, we are investing in the development of new airport infrastructure across the country, including in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), which will unlock greater growth opportunities, improve connectivity, enhance operational efficiency and enable us to lower costs even further. As we expand our fleet and aircraft orderbook to become the first global low-cost narrowbody network carrier, we intend to deploy more aircraft in our operations in the Philippines. These developments will allow Philippines AirAsia to expand our network, offer even more competitive fares and continue delivering greater value to Filipino travellers.”

*The name change from AirAsia X to AirAsia Group Berhad is subject to shareholder approval at the company’s 19th Annual General Meeting and registration by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM).

The collaboration reflects both parties’ commitment towards strengthening accessibility in Sarawak while supporting broader efforts to position the destination as the Gateway to Borneo.

The partnership also highlights the growing importance of regional collaboration in supporting tourism growth, improving travel accessibility, and strengthening destination visibility across international markets.

The MoU was signed by Dr Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor, Chief Executive Officer of STB, and Yang Mulia Puan Colonel Norsuriati Haji Sharbini, Interim Chief Executive Officer of RB. The signing was witnessed by Dylan Redas Noel, STB Marketing Director of North Asia and New Markets, and Alirahim Haji Abdul Rani, Manager Integrated Marketing of RB, representing STB and RB, respectively.

The ceremony was held in the presence of Dato Dennis Ngau, Chairman of STB, and Song Kai, President of Beijing Longway International Travel, RB General Sales Agent in the People’s Republic of China, as well as tourism industry stakeholders and trade partners in Shanghai.

Dr Sharzede said connectivity continues to play an important role in supporting tourism growth and strengthening how destinations position themselves within the increasingly competitive global travel landscape.

“Strategic collaborations such as this are important in strengthening accessibility, enhancing destination visibility, and creating greater opportunities to encourage travel into Sarawak and the wider Borneo region. As the Gateway to Borneo, connectivity remains an important component in supporting our ongoing tourism growth and international outreach efforts,” she said.

The partnership comes at a strategic time as STB continues to strengthen its tourism engagement efforts across China and North Asia through targeted destination marketing initiatives, trade collaborations, and consumer engagement programmes.

Through this collaboration with RB, both parties will strategically advance tourism promotion initiatives while enhancing seamless travel access into Sarawak. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to elevating Sarawak’s global presence, strengthening regional connectivity, and positioning the destination as a compelling gateway to Borneo’s rich and diverse experiences.

Yang Mulia Puan Colonel Norsuriati binti Haji Sharbini, Interim Chief Executive Officer of RB, noted: “We are pleased to strengthen our collaboration with Sarawak Tourism Board and our valued partners in China, as we continue to build on a long-standing relationship rooted in shared growth and connectivity. China remains a key market for Royal Brunei Airlines and the wider Borneo region, and together we see strong opportunities to position Brunei and Sarawak further as

compelling destinations for travellers seeking authentic cultural, nature, and wellness experiences.

Through our established network and ongoing partnerships, we remain committed to enhancing regional access and welcoming more visitors to discover the richness and diversity of Borneo.”

Separately, STB recently launched its first Campus Roadshow & Student Engagement Programme in collaboration with Qunar at Zhejiang International Studies University in China. The initiative was

aimed at introducing Sarawak to university students and young travellers through interactive tourism showcases and engagement activities highlighting the destination’s culture, adventure, nature, food, and festivals. Together, the MoU with RB and STB’s recent engagement initiatives in China reflect a broader strategy to strengthen Sarawak’s international market presence through connectivity, destination visibility, trade engagement, and consumer outreach. These efforts continue to support Sarawak’s positioning as the Gateway to Borneo while enhancing the destination’s accessibility and appeal across key international markets.

PENANG, 29 May 2026: WiT Indie 2026, the event for independent travel, will relocate to Bangunan UAB in the heart of George Town, Penang, as part of a new partnership with Think City, Malaysia’s urban impact organisation dedicated to making cities more livable, sustainable and resilient.

The event, now in its seventh year, returns under the theme “The Next 20: Small Is Mighty,” bringing Asia’s independent travel community into the creative, heritage and civic fabric of a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Bangunan UAB carries the weight of that history. Built in the 1930s as a godown, it later housed the first overseas branch of Indian Overseas Bank in 1937 before being restored in 2016. Today, it is home to Think City’s George Town operations, a building shaped by commerce, conservation and reinvention, much like the city around it.

WiT Founder Yeoh Siew Hoon said: “It is only through collaboration that the small gets mightier, and we are pleased that this partnership with Think City will enable us to be closer to, and more connected with, the creative and heritage community of George Town. The new space and its location will enable us to create the most vibrant, creative and collaborative WiT Indie ever with the local travel community in Penang. Bangunan UAB is not just a venue, it is a witness to George Town’s transformation, and Think City has been part of that transformation since the beginning.”

Established in 2009 with a specific purpose — to kick-start urban regeneration in George Town and stimulate economic growth for the city and the state — Think City has spent 15 years asking a single question: how do we build a sense of ownership in city communities, so that people take pride in their city and become active in its development?

The work that followed — across the North Seafront precinct, from the Padang and Esplanade to the Seawall, Fort Cornwallis, the moat reinstatement, and the Astaka — was about restoring the conditions for a liveable, sustainable, and inclusive city.

Think City Managing Director Dato’ Hamdan Abdul Majeed said: “Cities endure because people continue to find reason to gather within them. That is what we have worked to create in George Town, not just physical infrastructure, but the fabric of a place that draws people in and gives them reason to stay, return and invest their energy. It is with this spirit that we are delighted to welcome Asia’s independent travel community to Bangunan UAB and to George Town. Having the entrepreneurs, storytellers and travellers who give places their meaning convene here is exactly the kind of activation that a living heritage city needs.”

The partnership is a deliberate alignment of two complementary missions. Think the city’s regeneration work lays the foundation; WiT Indie activates it. Thriving cities, as Think City’s work has consistently shown, are sticky. They attract talent, creative communities, and sustained economic activity not through infrastructure alone but through the quality of the experience they offer.

Bringing the independent travel ecosystem into the heart of George Town deepens that stickiness, connecting a global community of travellers and entrepreneurs to a city that has earned its place on the region’s cultural map.

Since its launch in 2018, WiT Indie has been held at Penang Institute as part of a partnership with the state government’s think tank.

Siew Hoon said: “We’re grateful to Penang Institute for their support from the very beginning. With their support and community outreach, we’ve been able to grow our event to what it is today.”

Penang Institute, Executive Director Dato’ Dr Ooi Kee Beng, added: “We welcome any initiative that we feel can enhance Penang’s cultural economic stature and diversity over time. We give them advice, context and connections to help them realise how correct they have been in seeing Penang as a steady step up the ladder towards international success.”

WiT Indie was created by WiT (Web in Travel), part of the Northstar Travel Group, to focus on the independent travel sector, a sizeable and growing market enabled by the different waves of technology that have empowered travellers at every stage of the travel journey – from dreaming to planning, booking and experiencing.

SINGAPORE, 26 May 2026: Digital travel platform Agoda has revealed that value is emerging as an important factor in how Malaysians travel in 2026, influencing everything from accommodation choices to destination planning.

According to Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report, 63% of travellers are willing to consider lesser-known destinations if it means lower costs, signalling a shift toward more intentional and cost-conscious travel behaviour.

Agoda’s findings also highlight how this value-driven mindset is reflected in both spending habits and destination choices. Malaysian travellers are showing a clear preference for travel that delivers value without sacrificing the overall experience.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) expect to spend USD50 or less per night on accommodation in 2026, while 59% say price is the single most important factor when choosing where to stay. This reinforces that value not only influences openness to discovering alternative destinations but also shapes spending decisions.

Beyond spending considerations, Agoda’s findings also point to a shift in how Malaysians are planning their trips and what they prioritise when they travel.

Local and frequent travel remain part of the picture

Malaysian travellers are also adjusting how often and how far they travel, as value-driven decisions make shorter, more frequent, and closer-to-home trips more appealing. 47% expect most of their trips in 2026 to be domestic, while 37% plan to take four to six trips over the year. The most common trip length is four to seven days (42%), reflecting a shift toward travel that is more manageable, cost-conscious, and easier to fit into everyday life.

Even with affordability a priority, Malaysians are still considering experiences they value most. Relaxation is the top reason Malaysians expect to travel in 2026, cited by 69% of respondents. Culinary experiences follow at 33%, highlighting the continued role food plays in destination appeal. Travel also remains deeply social, with 59% planning to travel with family and 28% expecting to travel with their spouse or partner.

Agoda Country Director Malaysia and Brunei Fabian Teja said: “Malaysian travellers are planning more carefully and placing greater emphasis on value. Agoda’s latest findings show that cost matters, but so does making each trip count. Travellers are looking for options that help them manage their budgets while still enjoying the experiences that matter most, whether that is rest, time with loved ones, or discovering good food. Agoda brings these elements together by making it easier to book flights, accommodation and activities in one place with great value deals.”

At a time when international tourism markets are navigating shifting travel sentiment, economic pressures, and geopolitical developments, the commitment shown by both public- and private-sector partners reflects the enduring trust placed in RWMF’s cultural relevance, international reputation, and long-term tourism value.

Speaking during the RWMF 2026 Sponsors’ Appreciation Day held last week at Sheraton Hotel Kuching, YB Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Deputy Minister for Tourism Sarawak, representing YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative

Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, said the continued support received for RWMF reflects growing confidence in Sarawak’s tourism direction and the international value of culture-led tourism.

“Festivals such as RWMF do far more than entertain. They shape destination identity, strengthen international visibility, encourage cultural exchange, and create meaningful connections between people and places,” he said.

“Through RWMF, the world not only hears music. The world encounters Sarawak, our rainforest, our traditions, our communities, our hospitality, and our spirit.”

The appreciation event brought together sponsors, strategic partners, media organisations, tourism stakeholders, collaborators, and supporting agencies contributing towards the upcoming 29th edition of the festival.

This year’s sponsorship ecosystem reflects continued industry confidence and collaborative support across multiple sectors, reinforcing RWMF’s role as an established regional platform for cultural exchange, destination visibility, tourism engagement, and international connectivity.

Official partners for RWMF 2026

Malaysia Airlines and Firefly are the official airlines.

TV Sarawak as the Official Broadcast Partner, Astro Radio comprising Era FM Sarawak, Sinar FM, Mix FM and Lite FM as Official Radio Partners, and Ripcurl as the Official Apparel Partner.

The festival is further strengthened by organisations across the sustainability, hospitality, beverage, media, mobility, and corporate sectors, including Cuckoo International (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, F&N.

Together, these sponsors, partners, and collaborators play an important role in strengthening RWMF’s reach, experience, and continued growth as one of Sarawak’s key cultural and tourism platforms.

Sarawak Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Dr Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor said RWMF continues to be shaped by the collective commitment of partners, sponsors, media, collaborators, vendors, performers, crew, and tourism stakeholders who contribute to the festival experience.

“One of the most meaningful things about the Rainforest World Music Festival is that no single organisation can build it alone,” she said. “Every edition of RWMF is shaped by people and partners who continue to contribute their time, expertise, resources, creativity, and belief into making the festival what it is today.”

She added that each sponsor and strategic partner contributes to different parts of the visitor journey, from accessibility and hospitality to media visibility, sustainability implementation, mobility, and the overall festival experience.

As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, RWMF 2026 will continue to implement initiatives such as Green Ruai, Green Warriors, recycling, water refill stations, waste-reduction measures, and eco-conscious festival operations to encourage more responsible festival experiences and visitor behaviour.

RWMF 2026 is expected to feature over 200 performers from multiple countries, building on the festival’s growing international profile as one of the region’s established music and cultural festivals. The festival was also ranked No 8 in the Top 10 category at the Transglobal World Music Chart – Festival Awards 2025.

Taking place under the theme “Regenerations: Roots & Rhythms,” RWMF 2026 continues to highlight the evolving relationship between heritage and contemporary cultural expression while reinforcing Sarawak’s positioning as the Gateway to Borneo.

The Sponsors’ Appreciation Day concluded with sponsor appreciation presentations, a group photo session, and media engagement activities, celebrating the partnerships and collaborations that continue to shape Sarawak’s cultural and tourism landscape ahead of RWMF 2026.

KUCHING, Sarawak, 22 May 2026: Sarawak returned to IMEX Frankfurt 2026 for the fourth consecutive year, marking a new phase in its evolution as the Legacy Capital of Business Events in Malaysia and Borneo.

Held from 19 to 21 May 2026 at Messe Frankfurt, IMEX Frankfurt is one of the world’s leading business events trade shows, bringing together global meeting planners, association leaders, convention bureaus, and industry suppliers from around the world.

Building on years of international engagement, Sarawak is shifting beyond destination promotion towards strategic industry development and long-term impact through business events. This vision is supported by major investments in infrastructure and connectivity, including the upcoming expansion of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK2) and the introduction of Sarawak’s regional airline, AirBorneo.

Expected to be completed in 2028, BCCK2 will significantly increase Sarawak’s capacity to host larger international conventions and exhibitions. At the same time, AirBorneo and the continued growth of international hotel brands will strengthen regional accessibility and further enhance Sarawak’s business events ecosystem.

Held under the theme “Driving Impact Together”, Sarawak’s participation at IMEX Frankfurt reflects its commitment to collaboration, sustainability, innovation, and legacy-driven development, aligned with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

While Sarawak’s conventions and exhibitions strategy focuses on creating long-term legacies through knowledge exchange, industry advancement, and social impact, BESarawak is also introducing “Legacy Wonders”, its fresh approach to corporate meetings and corporate incentive travel in Sarawak.

Built on the pillars of culture, adventure, nature, gastronomy, wellness, and kindness, “Legacy Wonders” offers corporate meetings and incentive delegates meaningful, immersive experiences that foster deeper connections with Sarawak’s heritage, environment, and communities. Through cultural immersion, community engagement, and responsible travel, delegates are encouraged to contribute to and experience the positive legacies being created across the destination.

Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) Chairman Datu Hii Chang Kee, Deputy State Secretary (Operations), said Sarawak’s presence at IMEX Frankfurt is no longer just about destination visibility.

“Our focus today is on encouraging the global industry to contribute to the PCDS 2030 through meaningful collaboration and long-term growth opportunities,” said Datu Hii.

“Sarawak has evolved beyond being a host destination to becoming a strategic destination partner that collaborates with organisers to maximise the long-term value and impact of their events. This includes supporting legacy and sustainability initiatives, measuring impact, and creating opportunities for investment, innovation, sector growth, and wider industry collaboration. Through this approach, business events can contribute meaningfully to the PCDS 2030 and the broader United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” he added.

Sarawak is also strengthening its support ecosystem through initiatives such as the Academic Mobility Programme (AMP), which connects universities, industry players, and international partners through technical visits, study exchanges, and knowledge-sharing opportunities aligned with the state’s priority sectors.

“These initiatives reflect how Sarawak is strengthening its position as the legacy capital of business events through investments in both hard and soft infrastructure, while creating opportunities for different groups to contribute to community wellbeing and long-term development. Programmes such as AMP also provide platforms for academia and industry experts to channel their research, knowledge, and expertise into Sarawak’s priority sectors, driving meaningful collaboration and long-term impact across the destination,” said BESarawak Acting Chief Executive Officer Jason Tan Chin Foo.

Presented during the regional gala ceremony attended by tourism and hospitality leaders from across Asia, the award was received by Sarawak Tourism Board Chairman, YB Dato Dennis Ngau on behalf of the STB.

The Asian Tourism & Hospitality Awards 2025–2026 celebrate excellence, innovation, leadership, and service across Asia’s tourism and hospitality industry. This year’s edition featured more than 250 nominees across Asia and garnered over 100,000 public votes, reflecting the platform’s growing regional credibility and industry significance.

Speaking following the award presentation, YB Dato’ Dennis Ngau described the recognition as a reflection of the collective efforts behind Sarawak’s tourism development and global visibility.

“This award is not only for Sarawak Tourism Board, but for the entire tourism ecosystem in Sarawak — including the State Government, industry players, local communities, tourism stakeholders, media partners and all Sarawakians who continue to contribute to strengthening our tourism industry and to sharing Sarawak with the world.

“Sarawak’s tourism journey has always been guided by authenticity, sustainability, cultural preservation, and meaningful visitor experiences. We are proud that our direction and efforts are being recognised at a regional level. This progress is the result of meticulous planning under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, which continues to shape the state’s tourism direction and long-term aspirations,” he said.

He added that the recognition further strengthens Sarawak’s commitment towards supporting Malaysia’s tourism aspirations throughout Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

“As Malaysia welcomes the world through Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Sarawak remains committed to strengthening our tourism offerings, expanding international collaborations, improving connectivity, and creating experiences that continue to position Sarawak as a destination rich in culture, nature, adventure, food, and festivals.

Beyond destination promotion, we also aspire for Sarawak to be recognised as a place for meaningful tourism, where culture, sustainability, communities, and global engagement come together,” he added.

Sarawak continues to gain international recognition through its diverse tourism offerings and globally recognised signature events, including the Rainforest World Music Festival and Rainforest Youth Summit, which have helped position the state as a leading platform for cultural exchange, sustainability conversations, youth engagement, and experiential tourism in the region.

As Visit Malaysia Year 2026 continues, Sarawak remains focused on strengthening destination marketing efforts, strategic partnerships, event development, and sustainable tourism initiatives to attract both domestic and international visitors while reinforcing the state’s growing reputation on the global tourism stage.

The Asian Tourism & Hospitality Award was organised by TIN Media, one of Malaysia’s leading independent digital media platforms dedicated to the tourism and hospitality industries. Now in its second edition, the awards were held in conjunction with MAH Hospitality Week 2026 and the Hospitality Suppliers Expo 2026.

KOTA KINABALU, 13 May 2026: Sabah is adapting its tourism outlook as global aviation conditions continue to shift amid geopolitical tensions, rising costs, and significant changes in airline capacity.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said tourism planning for the state would be guided by a flexible framework that allows continuous assessment of global developments, particularly those affecting air connectivity and international travel demand.

“We are already seeing these changes impacting airline capacity, with route suspensions and reduced frequencies affecting connectivity into Kota Kinabalu, and we are closely monitoring developments to ensure our tourism planning remains responsive,” he said.

International routes

AirAsia has suspended the Singapore–Kota Kinabalu route from 13 May to 30 November.
Jakarta–Kota Kinabalu until 21 May.
Ho Chi Minh–Kota Kinabalu beginning 1 July.

Batik Air has also suspended its Seoul–Kota Kinabalu route since 28 April.

Domestic routes

AirAsia will temporarily suspend its Sibu–Kota Kinabalu and Bintulu–Kota Kinabalu routes from 8 to 30 June.

Jafry said these developments reflect broader external factors that may influence visitor arrivals and overall connectivity trends.

He said arrivals performance planning is based on scenario-based assessments reflecting different operating environments, including prolonged external disruptions, a stabilising baseline, and potential recovery in airline capacity.

Based on preliminary statistics, Sabah recorded 932,970 arrivals up to March 2026, comprising 537,317 domestic and 395,653 international visitors.
