SINGAPORE, 19 May 2026: Digital travel platform Agoda reveals that family travel remains the most popular choice for Asian travellers, ranking higher in preference than travel with a spouse or partner, or even with friends.

Regionally, Indonesians lead the ranks with 69% of survey respondents selecting family travel as the top choice, higher than the Asia-wide average of 52%. They are followed closely by Vietnam (61%), Malaysia (59%), Taiwan (58%) and the Philippines (55%). Thailand and South Korea both report half of respondents (50%) travelling with family, while India records 40% and Japan 32%.

The findings come from Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook survey and underscore the enduring importance of family as a driver of travel across the region. For many travellers, family trips prioritise shared experiences, convenience and value, whether that means multi-generational holidays, school holiday breaks, or extended family reunions. Destinations that offer family-friendly accommodations, accessible transport and activities that appeal to multiple age groups will continue to be a draw for family travellers this summer.

Families making their summer vacation plans can take practical steps to make booking and travel go more smoothly. When searching for accommodation, filtering for larger room configurations or connecting rooms and suites can help ensure everyone has space to relax, while prioritising properties with kid-friendly amenities such as pools and play areas can help keep children engaged. Flexible cancellation and modification policies offer peace of mind and safeguard plans that may change. Lastly, choosing locations with easy access to family attractions to reduce transit time to maximise quality time together.

Agoda Associate Vice President Krishna Rathi commented: “Family travel remains at the heart of many people’s travel plans across Asia, especially during the summer vacation months. Our insights show clear differences by market but a shared priority for comfort, convenience and quality experiences that bring the family together. At Agoda, we make it easy for families to find the right stay, whether they need extra space, child-friendly facilities or proximity to family attractions so they can focus on making memories together.”

JAKARTA, 14 May 2026: Indonesia’s luxury hotel sector has returned to pre-pandemic occupancy levels, outpacing all other hotel classes and signalling renewed strength in premium travel demand as the country’s tourism industry moves into its next phase of growth.

The recovery, alongside rising branded residence momentum in Bali, took centre stage at the inaugural Indonesia Tourism Xchange 2026 (ITX 2026), held on Tuesday at The Langham, Jakarta, in front of an audience of more than 400 industry leaders from hospitality, tourism, investment, data, sustainability and branded real estate.

From left to right: David Johnson, CEO – Delivering Asia; Matt Gebbie, Director – Pacific Asia, Horwath HTL; Edward Kusma, Director – Harmoni Bali; Sherona Shng, Regional Vice President – Operations, Asia, Langham Hospitality Group; Bill Barnett, Managing Director, C9 Hotelworks; Jesper Palmqvist, Regional Vice President – Asia Pacific, STR.

As host venue and partner, The Langham, Jakarta provided the setting for the inaugural forum, placing the discussion within one of the capital’s leading luxury hospitality addresses and connecting the event to wider conversations around premium travel, mixed-use development and branded hospitality.

“Luxury travellers coming to Indonesia are not looking for replicas of global hotels,” said Langham Hospitality Group Regional Vice President – Operations, Asia, Sherona Shng. “They are seeking meaning, context, and a sense of place. The brands that succeed here will be those that understand Indonesia’s cultural complexity and deliver experiences that feel deeply personal, not standardised.”

According to STR, the hotel analytics division of CoStar Group, luxury hotel occupancy in Indonesia for the 12 months ending March 2026 has returned to pre-pandemic levels, outperforming all other hotel classes, which remain 5.5 percentage points below their previous highs. Indonesia’s hotel rates have also risen by more than 40% since 2019, supported by market maturation and new high-end hotel supply.

The data points to a more confident outlook for premium hospitality in Indonesia. Building on this, luxury hotels have led average daily rate growth since 2023, while Bali’s luxury segment continues to record strong rate growth, driven by international demand and a diverse set of source markets.

Indonesia’s luxury hotel occupancy returned to pre-pandemic levels for the 12 months ending March 2026, outpacing other hotel classes and underlining the resilience of high-end travel demand. Source: STR / CoStar.

Alongside the luxury travel rebound, ITX 2026 also spotlighted the rise of branded residences in Bali. According to C9 Hotelworks research, Asia’s branded residences pipeline has reached IDR707 trillion (about USD40 billion) across 50,025 units, representing 30.3% year-on-year growth. Indonesia accounts for IDR24.7 trillion, or about USD1.4 billion, across 1,145 launched units, highlighting the country’s regional importance.

Bali has emerged as one of Indonesia’s key branded residence markets, accounting for 25% of the country’s branded residence market value. The island now has more than 70 active hospitality-managed developments, with branded residences accounting for around 10% of active supply. Canggu/Berawa is the largest cluster, with 1,703 units across 25 properties, followed by Uluwatu, Seseh/Pererenan/Nyany, Seminyak and Sanur.

Organised by Horwath HTL, C9 Hotelworks, STR, QUO Global, Greenview and Delivering Asia, in partnership with Langham Hospitality Group, ITX 2026 is a new annual platform for market intelligence, industry dialogue and commercial connections across Indonesia’s tourism and hospitality sectors. The event is supported by the Indonesian Hotel & Restaurant Association (PHRI), the Jakarta Hotels Association (JHA), and the Bali Hotels Association (BHA).

Under the theme “Reimagining Journeys”, ITX 2026 addressed how Indonesia’s tourism sector is evolving in response to luxury demand, hotel performance, branded residences, investment trends, design, technology and sustainability.

Branded residences have grown rapidly across Asia, with Bali now accounting for 25% of Indonesia’s branded residences market value. (Source: C9 Hotelworks Market Research, 2026).

The ITX 2026 programme opened with a session on Indonesia’s investment climate and 2026 outlook, led by Bower Group Asia Indonesia Managing Director Douglas E Ramage.

The forum covered key forces shaping the sector, including luxury hospitality, hotel performance trends, technology, branded residences, leadership, culturally grounded design, ownership strategy and sustainability.

“Indonesia’s opportunity is not simply growth. It is smart growth,” said Horwath HTL Director – Pacific Asia Matt Gebbie. “Luxury hotels, in particular, face higher expectations on performance, capital returns and differentiation. Understanding which destinations, segments and concepts will truly perform in 2026 and beyond is now critical for investors and operators alike.”

Branded residences were examined in a dedicated session moderated by C9 Hotelworks Managing Director, Bill Barnett, featuring speakers from Harmoni Bali, Marriott International and Langham Hospitality Group.

“Branded residences are no longer a secondary product in Indonesia. They are becoming a primary driver of luxury real estate demand,” said Barnett. “What makes Indonesia compelling is the combination of brand trust, destination appeal and lifestyle aspiration. The challenge is aligning those elements in markets that are diverse, fragmented and culturally nuanced.”

JAKARTA, 12 May 2026: Under the guidance of Bank Indonesia and the People’s Bank of China, the China-Indonesia cross-border QR payment linkage was launched at a recent event in Jakarta.

It involves collaboration between Indonesia’s Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) and China’s leading payment ecosystems, enabled by Alipay+, the unified wallet gateway of Ant International, and UnionPay International.

A milestone in regional connectivity, the initiative opens a new bridge for commerce between China’s 1.4 billion people and Indonesia’s 280 million citizens. Consumers from both countries can now make seamless and secure QR code payments using their home e-wallets.

At the launch, users of Alipay, an Alipay+ wallet partner, and the UnionPay App can pay at more than 40 million QRIS merchants across Indonesia, mostly MSMEs. On the other hand, QRIS-supported e-wallets and bank apps will be able to scan more than 80 million Alipay and UnionPay QR codes in China.

The implementation of QR payments between Indonesia and China strengthens the commitment to using local currencies in cross-border transactions, enhances exchange rate visibility and travel convenience, and promotes more efficient tourism and trade flows.

Driving growth for local merchants

This linkage significantly expands access for local businesses — especially micro and small enterprises—to international customers across two major Asian economies. For local Indonesian merchants, the launch requires no new hardware or integration: an existing merchant QRIS code is all that’s needed to accept payments from Chinese travellers, unlocking new revenue streams from inbound tourism and cross-border consumption.

In 2025, Chinese arrivals to Indonesia reached a six-year high, with more than 1.34 million visitors. Enabling frictionless payment for these visitors has a direct impact on merchant revenues, particularly for the MSMEs, who account for over 99% of all businesses in Indonesia.

The QRIS–China linkage reflects a broader push toward interoperable, real-time payment connectivity across Asia. The cross-border QR payment linkage is a government-to-government initiative supported by industry partners like Ant International. Alipay+ provides the technical layer that connects both ecosystems, enabling interoperability between payment systems and allowing users to pay with their home wallets. At the same time, merchants receive funds through their existing domestic infrastructure.

This collaboration is part of ongoing efforts to create an open, inclusive payments ecosystem that supports regional trade, travel, and digital economic growth. It also builds on efforts to expand QRIS cross-border connectivity across ASEAN and beyond.

Cross-border QRIS transactions via Alipay showed strong growth momentum during the pilot phase, reflecting growing awareness and engagement with cross-border QR transactions. It also emphasises the importance of strengthening innovation and digital readiness to ensure that digital transformation adds value to the national economy.

As merchant adoption and wallet connections expand, the initiative is expected to accelerate digital payment usage further, strengthen financial inclusion, and deepen economic connectivity among Indonesia, China, and the broader region.

The Indonesia-China launch reflects Alipay+’s commitment to connecting with national payment schemes. As a unified wallet gateway, Alipay+ partners with 50 international e-wallets and bank apps, connecting their more than 2 billion user accounts to more than 150 million merchants, including over 10 national payment schemes across Asia and beyond.

Ant International is a leading global digital payment, digitisation, and financial technology provider. It offers a unified techfin platform that helps financial institutions and merchants of all sizes achieve inclusive growth. Its unified wallet gateway, Alipay+, provides cross-border payment and digital services that help connect global merchants to consumers.

BALI, Indonesia, 8 May 2026: Vio Travel, an Asia-Pacific online DMC, has become the first in Asia to be certified under the Preferred by Nature Standard for Sustainable Travel Activities V1.1, a Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)- Recognised Standard.

Vio Travel’s Indonesian operations are the first to gain certification, following an independent audit confirming full compliance across the standard’s four core pillars: responsible management, people, nature and climate. Other Vio country offices will follow.

The audit confirms 100% compliance across all audited areas across the company’s Indonesia operations:

Responsible management – ensuring all management and business practices are legal and responsible;

People – upholding people’s well-being and human rights;

Nature – protecting nature and the environment;

Climate – actively reducing and mitigating climate impacts.

Indonesia is the first destination to achieve certification, with the same standards set to be progressively extended across Vio Travel’s network of 15 destinations. Importantly, this milestone reflects validation rather than transformation, formal recognition of practices already embedded within the business.

The official award ceremony took place in Bali on 30 April 2026, after working with local suppliers on sustainable practices.

Vio Travel’s Sustainability Coordinator, Novita Rosiana Dewi, led the certification process from the ground up, translating the company’s long-held values into the required documented frameworks.

Vio Travel Co-CEO and Co-Founder, Dominik Schaufler, commented: “We act as an extension of our partners’ businesses on the ground. The standards we uphold — and the suppliers we work with — directly shape the experiences their clients have. Our roadmap is clear: to progressively extend this sustainability framework across our network, applying the same rigorous standards that earned certification in Indonesia.”

Vio Travel operates across 15 countries in the Asia-Pacific, serving company partners with travel agents and tour operators globally, managing ground operations, supplier networks, and itinerary delivery in markets where trusted local execution is critical. Its corporate headquarters are in Bangkok, Thailand.

Preferred by Nature is one of the world’s leading sustainability certification bodies. Its Standard for Sustainable Travel Activities V1.1 is a Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Recognised Standard – the global benchmark for credible and transparent sustainability standards in tourism.

JAKARTA, 8 April 2026: Indonesian airline TransNusa has announced the launch of a new direct domestic flight connecting Jakarta and Lombok, to strengthen further access to one of Indonesia’s key tourism and regional travel hubs.

TransNusa Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Bernard Francis, said that the introduction of this new route comes on the back of the airline’s focus on increasing and strengthening connectivity while boosting domestic tourism.

“Lombok is not only rapidly growing as a domestic and international tourist destination, but the island is also the main gateway for tourism in the West Nusa Tenggara region through its Lombok International Airport,” Datuk Francis said, adding that Lombok attracts more than 1.2 million tourists annually.

The island offers dramatic trekking routes, cascading waterfalls and panoramic mountain views, attracting adventurers and nature lovers from around the world.
