MANILA, 11 December 2019:  Tourist arrivals to the Philippines tipped the 6.8 million mark for the 10 months of the year, January to October, the country’s Department of Tourism reported on Monday.

The headcount at immigration checkpoints reached 6,800,052 trips up 15.04% over the 5,911,161 arrivals during year-on-year.

During October alone visits increased in eight of the top 10 source markets. Korea topped all markets with 1,609,172 arrivals (+21.75%).

China came in second with 1,499,524 (+41.13%) followed by the USA in third place with 872,335 (+2.53%).

Japan in fourth place registered 569,625 trips (+7.43%), followed by Taiwan, with a record of 282,220 (+36.77%) completing the top five markets.

The Department of Tourism secretary, Bernadette Romulo-Puyat claimed the main drivers behind the growth included improved air connectivity and intensified marketing promotions such as the  “It’s More Fun in the Philipines” campaign.

Helping to build awareness, the Philippines won back-to-back diving accolades at the World Travel Awards in Muscat, Oman, beating eight other global dive destinations.
