New travel portal opens in Laos

-

VIENTIANE, 3 December 2019: Discover Laos Today, a start-up travel portal, celebrated its official launch last week after a soft opening phase that started in September.

Headquartered in Luang Prabang the travel portal claims to have more than 100 hotels and travel content suppliers signed up from in and around the famous World Heritage town but the plan is to replicate that success across the country.

Vientiane Times reported the  Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Ounthuang Khaophanh, Director of the Luang Prabang Provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department  Soulithip Norkhounphonh, and 100 tourism professionals from hotels, restaurants and tour companies attended the opening event last week.

The portal’s soft launch took off in September driven by a Facebook competition offering winners hotel stays in Luang Prabang worth UDSD3,000 in a bid to boost social media ‘likes.’

Leading the venture, described as a travel agency and travel information centre, are co-founders Ninthala Keohamphet from Laos identified as the GM, Singaporean Benny Kong (programme director)  and Cambodian Danou Samnang (creative director).

On its website, Discover Laos Today states it is a” licensed land tour operator run by MyLaoTours based in Luang Prabang and supported by the Laos Tourism Board.”

Commenting on the launch, the founders said they would target Asian millennial travellers, offering travel information and bookings for its partner hotels and travel content suppliers.

The website founders claim the site will help to connect Lao SMEs to an international audience through content, multimedia and social media. It will also be available in Thai, Mandarin, Korean and Japanese languages soon.
