Thirty destinations off the radar

-

LONDON, 6 November 2019: To tackle over-tourism, travel bloggers reveal the top 30 emerging travel destinations for 2020.

The annual ‘Emerging Destination Awards’ identify 30 unsung travel destinations that could be alternative destinations to overcrowded spots. They are definitely off the radar.

Compiled by a panel of popular travel bloggers the annual awards honouring trending destinations were published Tuesday on the blog TravelLemming.com, which promotes travel to emerging destinations as one solution to over-tourism.

Topping the list is Georgia, a Caucasian country that’s quietly trending with European travellers but facing an unexpected glut of capacity after Russia shut down flights to Tbilisi this past summer.

Other top winners in each region include Rwanda, The Cook Islands, Nova Scotia, Kyrgyzstan, and Ecuador. Just one destination from Asia, “Southern Laos,” particularly Champasak and its World Heritage temple site, is named 21st on the list of 30 destinations.

Three destinations in Australia featured; Launceston in Tasmania (11), Northern Territories (15) and McClaren Vale, South Australia (26).

Travel Lemming received nominations for the awards from almost 100 tourism boards and governments worldwide. To be included on the list destinations must be e not only incredible places to travel but also be capable of handling additional tourists.

Winners were selected after voting by 30 of the most popular travel bloggers in the industry. Collectively the judges have a total following of 12 million.

“The world is a big place, and there’s a lot more to explore than the Instagram-famous spots. While others struggle under the weight of over-tourism, these 30 emerging destinations have room to spare and are opening their arms to intrepid travellers open to trying something different,” said Travel Lemming CEO Nate Hake.

“Travellers need to be aware that local communities are feeling the crunch of over-tourism. Seek out new destinations and new experiences; don’t just follow the trends of social media,” added Matt Kepnes, one of the judges and founder of NomadicMatt.com.

Travel Lemming is a travel blog founded by Nate Hake, an American who has been travelling the world full-time since 2016. The site’s mission is to help highlight emerging and underappreciated destinations around the world.
