Royal Enfield drives bike tours

-

YANGON, 2 October 2019: Discovery Rides, the adventure branch of boutique tour operator Discovery DMC, is pioneering Royal Enfield motorcycle tours in Myanmar.

Based out of the country’s second-largest city, Mandalay, Discovery’s Enfield day and evening tours introduce traveller to popular local hangouts, hidden backstreets, off the beaten trail temples and village tracks that rarely feature in Mandalay’s tour itineraries.

Motorcycles are the most common mode of transport in Mandalay city much like major cities in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia,

Discovery Rides raises the quality bar of motorcycle tours in Myanmar with fascinating trips on the iconic UK motorcycle brand, Royal Enfield.

Discovery DMC managing director, Mika Itavaara, is confident the Royal Enfield motorcycle will create another dimension for Mandalay’s touring scene.

He explains, “Riding a motorbike removes the wall between the viewer and the world around them. Mandalay is best experienced on the back of a comfortable bike like a Royal Enfield, with a local driver.”

The Discovery Rides team has developed several itineraries led by its expert guides that can be combined with any visit to Mandalay.

In addition to the full- or one-day tour offerings, Discovery Rides offers private multi-day journeys with Royal Enfields ranging from eight-day trips covering the classic highlights of Myanmar to 14-day expeditions that explore the ridges and mountains of Chin State as well as remote beaches along the palm-fringed Bay of Bengal.

Many international travellers to Myanmar have not heard of – much less visited – the far reaches of Chin State and Myanmar’s fabulous coastline beyond Ngapali making them worthy destinations for true adventurers.

Itavaara is passionate about these remote explorations. “It’s the best way to visit many of the most interesting, untouched communities. Travelling by motorcycle is cost-effective, better than taking a jeep, and much more energizing.  You enjoy better views, more interaction with local communities, and there is hardly any traffic on the roads that we’ve carefully select when planning routes.”

Discovery Rides also offers off-road bike tours.

Royal Enfields are old classic motorcycles originally manufactured in the UK for the British army in India during the first and second world wars. They are now a collector’s item characterized by a timeless design and a toughness that is ideal for rugged conditions. Royal Enfield Tours have long been popular in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

Brand history

Royal Enfield was a brand name under which The Enfield Cycle Company Limited of Redditch, Worcestershire, UK, sold motorcycles, bicycles, lawnmowers and stationary engines, which they had manufactured.

The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was built in 1901. The Enfield Cycle Company is responsible for the design and original production of the Royal Enfield Bullet, the longest-surviving motorcycle design in history.

Enfield’s remaining motorcycle business became part of Norton Villiers in 1967 with the business closing in 1978.

In 1955, Enfield Cycle Company partnered with Madras Motors in India in forming Enfield of India, based in Chennai, and started assembling the 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle in Madras. The first machines were assembled from components imported from England.

Starting in 1957, Enfield of India acquired the machines necessary to build components in India, and by 1962 all components were made in India.

Enfield of India continued producing the ‘Bullet’ and began branding its motorcycles ‘Royal Enfield’ in 1999. A lawsuit over the use of ‘Royal’, brought by trademark owner David Holder, was judged in favour of Enfield of India, who now produce motorcycles under the Royal Enfield name. The models produced and marketed in India include Cafe Racers, Cruisers, Retros and Adventure Tourers.
