KUALA LUMPUR, 29 August 2019: Qatar Airways will launch flights to Langkawi in north Malaysia, 15 October, as part of the airline’s expansion plans in Southeast Asia.

Qatar Airways group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, made the announcement, Wednesday, at a press conference held at the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Chief Executive Officer of Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Dr Hezri Bin Adnan represented the holiday island at the event.

The new service marks Qatar Airways’ third destination in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Qatar Airways will initially fly four weekly services from Doha to Langkawi with a stop in Penang. Services will increase to five weekly services effective 27 October.

The airline uses a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring 22 seats in business class and 232 seats in economy.

Langkawi Island is part of an archipelago of 99 islands surrounded in the Andaman Sea on Malaysia’s northern west coast. It is home to lush tropical rainforests and mangroves rich in flora and fauna. The island was listed among Travel + Leisure’s 50 best places to visit in 2019 and is a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Chief Executive Officer of Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Dr Hezri Bin Adnan said: “The launch of Qatar Airways’ direct services to Langkawi certainly bodes well for the island and goes in line with our plans of further cementing its position as an international tourist destination. Not only that, but it also augurs well for Langkawi’s economy and tourism industry as we get ready to welcome visitors from across the globe to experience the island’s distinctive culture and scenic views at one of the finest tropical gems in Malaysia.”
