AirAsia to fly to Belitung Island

SEPANG, 20 August 2019: AirAsia announced Monday it will start flying direct from Kuala Lumpur to Belitung Island off the east coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.

AirAsia will fly four times weekly as of 2 October, making it the first airline to serve the route.

Belitung, surrounded by more than 100 small islands and is famed for its “pristine beaches and clear water.”

AirAsia regional commercial head Amanda Woo said: “Indonesia has more to offer than just Bali and Lombok. Belitung is a beautiful, amazing place with huge untapped tourism potential, and we hope that with this new direct service, more people will be able to discover this hidden gem.”

Belitung is one of the 10 destinations that the Indonesian government is developing under the theme “10 Balis”.

To launch the new route, AirAsia has set the fare at a just MYR79* from Kuala Lumpur.

Bookings must be made on www.airasia.com or the AirAsia mobile app by 25 August for travel between 2 October 2019 and 28 March 2020.

Belitung Island lies east of Sumatra and its largest town, Tanjung Pandan, features Dutch colonial architecture and a colourful harbour. Pulau Lengkuas, one of many small offshore islands, has a 19th-century lighthouse and is a popular location for snorkelling among coral reefs.

In addition to its two beaches, Belitung is also close to smaller picturesque islands with white, sandy beaches. They include Pulau Pasir, Pulau Batu Burung Garuda, Pulau Leebong and Pulau Batu Berlayar.

Travellers can also explore geopark experiences at natural attractions such as Kelayang Cave, Kelapa Kampit Open Pit, Pulau Kepayang Turtle Conservation or Gurok Beraye Waterfall.

Photography enthusiasts should head to Danau Kaolin, a scenic lake with bright blue waters and white mineral deposits, or Museum Kata Andrea Hirata, a literary museum decorated in rainbow colours.

In addition to the new route, AirAsia also operates daily flights to Belitung from the Indonesian capital Jakarta beginning 1 October.

AirAsia currently connects Kuala Lumpur to 14 other Indonesian destinations; Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bali, Lombok, Yogyakarta, Pekanbaru, Pontianak, Padang, Palembang, Semarang, Makassar, Bandung and Banda Aceh.
