Travellers wary of Hong Kong

-

HONG KONG, 25 July 2019: Demonstrations are continuing in Hong Kong mainly in the evenings and at the weekends.

According to travel advisories, confrontations are continuing to occur between police and protestors and have in recent days extended to weekday evenings.

Previously most of the protest marches occurred at the weekend, leaving the downtown districts free of disruption during business days.

An update by Australia’s SmartTraveller online service warns travellers to expect road closures and public transport disruptions.

Also, so-called criminally linked individuals are targeting commuters in the New Territories.

The current travel advisory warning recommends travellers to avoid demonstrations, monitor local media follow the advice of local authorities and exercise reasonable safety precautions.

Family travel from countries in the region appears the most likely to postpone trips to Hong Kong.  Travel agents in Bangkok this week are advising family groups planning trips to Hong Kong’s famous theme parks to postpone bookings possibly until mid-August.

Travel safety warnings posted by a Facebook group in Hong Kong, linked to protesters warned: “Due to excessive violence, it is advised you postpone your travel plans to Hong Kong until further notice.”

Hong Kong Police came under intense scrutiny following the violent clashes last week. There have been calls for an independent committee to be set up to look at how police handled the protests.
