Places to pack up and go

-

BANGKOK, 26 July 2019: A packing and logistics specialist in the UK might seem like an odd source for travel data, but as Brexit worries surge, it may indicate where Brits are heading.

International shipping specialist, Pack and Send UK, says it aggregated a ton of data to find where the best places for Brits looking to escape Brexit.

Findings seem to suggest that Brits are in the mood to call a packing agency and ship out to greener pastures.

The company claims it used the latest data from reputable sources to rank 93 global cities from best to worst across 10 data points in four key categories – wellbeing, social life, home life and integration.

Top 10 places to emigrate
Country Average Score # Bottom 10 places to emigrate Country Average Score
1 Perth Australia 8.12 1 Mumbai India 3.86
2 Brisbane Australia 8.10 2 Shanghai China 3.97
3 Adelaide Australia 8.04 3 Karachi Pakistan 4.00
4 Wellington New Zealand 8.01 4 Lahore Pakistan 4.04
5 Sydney Australia 7.89 5 Guangzhou China 4.05
6 Ottawa Canada 7.86 6 Hong Kong China 4.08
7 Auckland New Zealand 7.82 7 Lagos Nigeria 4.21
8 Melbourne Australia 7.78 8 Beijing China 4.25
9 Vancouver Canada 7.69 9 Dhaka Bangladesh 4.54
10 Toronto Canada 7.68 10 Cairo Egypt 4.56

Perth, Australia rose to top the ranks as the best emigration destination overall, closely followed by Brisbane and Adelaide, all in Australia.

Bangkok ranked 79th out of the 93 cities surveyed, suggesting very few Brexit escapees will be heading for Thailand.

It suffered mediocre scores across all categories, with the best score being for its alcohol prices. That is hard to swallow when you consider the massive tax on drinks and the restrictions on purchasing hours in shops.

Particularly disappointing scores registered for its migrant acceptance, which critics would probably say was zero.

Other cities in Asia didn’t fare so well either. Cities in China, India and Pakistan were in the bottom five and Mumbai ended up as the lowest-ranked city despite its status as India’s financial capital.

Houston, Riyadh and Johannesburg are the top three places for having house prices that aren’t obscene. We can’t imagine anyone packing for a new life in Riyadh, but that could be put down to a data glitch?

Now for the shock, Vietnam is the place to emigrate if you want to spend your days quaffing cheap beers. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the top two spots for the most affordable average pint price.

Eastern Europe isn’t very welcoming to migrants, with Budapest, Prague, Zagreb, Moscow and Saint Petersburg all in the bottom 10.

The United States’ low scores for peacefulness (55th in the world) and vacation days drags down its cities rankings – San Francisco the highest at 23rd overall.

Of the global expat destinations analysed, Perth (8.12) ranks in first position overall.  Brisbane follows (8.10) and Adelaide (8.04)  second,  Wellington third (8.01) and Sydney (7.89)

fifth. Of the top 10 expat destinations, five of them are in Australia.

Perth’s ranking above other more well-known places may seem surprising, but it scored highly for the majority of critical categories. It received particularly positive scores for its quality of life (9.10), migrant acceptance (9.57) and ease of language learning (10).

At the other end of the spectrum, all of the expat destinations in the bottom 10 are in Asia or Africa, with Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai all making appearances.

Nearly half of the lowest ranking destinations were in China, due to generally low scores for vacation days (1.39) and the average house price to income ratio (1.70). China also has one of the most challenging languages to learn for native English speakers, leading to the lowest possible score of 0.00.

Shanghai is the lowest-ranked Chinese city. China’s most-populous city scored poorly in the social life and ease of integration areas. Its house price to income ratio is also particularly low due to the high demand for living space.

The home of Bollywood, Mumbai has the dubious honour of filling the last place on the list. Chronic overcrowding and severe poverty for many of the city’s residents means Mumbai scores very poorly across all our areas. Exceptionally low values include happiness, amount of vacation, house price to income ratio and quality of living.
