MATTA honours tourism pioneer

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 July 2019: The inaugural MATTA Awards honoured Dato Seri Tunku-Iskandar Tunku-Abdullah an ASEAN tourism pioneer and leader of Malaysia’s travel community with the Tourism Icon Award.

The veteran travel industry player and member of Negri Sembilan royal family was one of nine winners at the presentation ceremony and gala dinner hosted Sunday 30 June.

The MATTA Awards 2019, organised by the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents recognises the achievements of its members and their contribution to the Malaysian tourism industry.

MATTA president Datuk Tan Kok Liang, who came up with the idea of the awards, told Star Online that the event was also held to recognise the resilience of travel and tour operators especially in the face of disruptive technology.

Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, who was a special guest at the event, praised MATTA for organising the awards.

Other winners included: Asian Overland Services Tour and Travel (Best Tour Operator – Inbound); Apple Vacations and Conventions (Best Tour Operator – Outbound); Borneo Eco Tours (Best Tour Operator – Responsible Tourism); Hwajing Travel and Tours (Best Travel Agency – Cruise); Toranj Tour and Travel (Best Travel Agency – Startup); Andalusia Travel and Tours (Best Travel Agency – Umrah and Hajj); Ice Holidays (Most Creative Marketing Campaign); and Naam World Travel and Tours (Most Creative Tour Packages).

The event was partly sponsored by Malaysia Airlines.
