Hong Kong protest spreads to airport

-

HONG KONG, 26 July 2019: Disruptions are possible at Hong Kong International Airport on Friday according to reliable travel advisories.

Anti-extradition activists also announced on Facebook and Twitter they intended to organise a protest inside Hong Kong International Airport, Friday afternoon. The protest is due to take place in the arrival hall of Terminal One from 1300 to 2359 (local time).

If the protest proceeds, it could cause delays or disruptions to flight schedules.

Travellers are advised to allow additional and sufficient time for their flight during this time.

Activists are shifting their targets for protests from business district streets and landmarks to transport hubs.

TV news channels also confirmed protesters in Hong Kong had a new target for demonstrations – the city’s international airport. Netizens posted a call on social media channels for a rally against the extradition bill at the airport. Several aviation staff unions vowed to join including the Cathay Pacific flight attendants union.

Protesters entered Admiralty Station Thursday disrupting train services. Protest groups blamed the MRT management for “being culpable” in last week’s attack against protesters inside the station complex.

The current travel advisory warns travellers to be cautious and avoid protest areas and marched in Hong Kong.

However, if the protest successfully occupies the airport, the warning level could raise a notch to advise tourists to avoid travel to Hong Kong entirely. Tourists and families planning holidays to Hong Kong during Thailand’s long weekend holiday from 26 to 29 July and again from 9 to 12 August are advised to reconsider travel plans.
