Plastic kicked out of rainforest

-

KUCHING, 11 June 2019: Organisers of this year’s Rainforest World Music Festival are sending a clear message; bring your own water bottles.

This year, for the first time the festival has stopped all sales of single-use plastic bottles.

Instead, the organisers will set up 20 water stations where water bottles can be refilled.

This decision came after over 60,000 single-use water bottles were collected at last year’s festival, prompting the Sarawak Tourism Board to take steps to reduce the waste and make the event more environmentally friendly.

“This will possibly make the biggest impact at RWMF this year as it will greatly reduce the amount of single-use plastics at the festival,” said the STB CEO, Sharzede Datu HJ Salleh Askor.

STB’s CEO outlined a series of green initiatives for this year’s music festival at a press conference last week.

It involves recycling, up-cycling, composting and the use of shuttle buses to reduce carbon emissions.

The 22nd edition of the festival will take place 12 to 14 July at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Kuching.
