MAI: Seven stars for safety

-

BANGKOK, 28 June 2019: Myanmar Airways International has been awarded a 7-star safety rating by AirlineRatings.com.

It is also the first airline in the country to gain IATA Operational Safety Audit Programme recognition.

AirlineRatings.com, credited with being the world’s only safety and product rating agency, said MAI is the first and only recipient in Myanmar to maintain a 100% safety record since its inception in 1993.

The airline flies scheduled service to Bangkok, Singapore, Guangzhou and Kolkata from its base at Yangon International Airport.

Flying Airbus A320s family aircraft MAI supplies around 5% of the international seat capacity in and out Myanmar.

Despite having an impeccable safety score, MAI has suffered a chequered history on the commercial front often in the past losing the support of Myanmar’s military leaders while facing stiff competition from fully owned government airlines.

However, appears to have overcome political obstacles and will resume expansion this year. It hopes to regain its former position as the market leader in seats flown to international destinations to and from Myanmar.

MAI’s fleet plan includes four additional aircraft which it plans to use launch five new routes and grow international passenger traffic by more than 20% starting next year. (Source: AirlineRatings.com)
