Coronation of HM the King

BANGKOK, 29 April 2019: The coronation of HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn (King Rama X) will be celebrated. Saturday, 4 May, followed by a national holiday on Monday, 6 May.

The ceremonies and the crowing of HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn will take in the Thai capital for three days 4 to 6 May. He ascended to the throne in October 2016.

Events leading up to the coronation started in earnest in April leading up the crowning 4 May, which will officially mark the beginning of his reign.

May 2

His Majesty will pay respect to royal ancestors and the capital’s spirits in the Royal Plaza and at the Memorial Bridge.

May 3

HM the King’s name, royal fortune and royal seal will be moved to the throne hall, while His Majesty pays respect to the Emerald Buddha and royal remains of previous monarchs of the Chakri Dynasty.

May 4

The official coronation ceremony will take place.

May 5

The inauguration of the HM the King’s official name and signature, the re-establishment of the royal family members’ ranks and a royal parade will be held in the capital.

To facilitate the parade 34 roads will close from midnight onward. Roads that will be impacted include Khao San, Ratchadamnoen Nok, Charoen Krung, Nakhon Sawan, Maha Chai, Dinso, Ram Buttri, Phra Sumen, Rachini and Maharat.

May 6

HM the King grants an audience to the public and foreign diplomats.

Again many roads in and around the Bangkok’s historical district will be closed including Rachini, Ratchadamnoen Nai, Ratchadamnoen Klang, Sanam Chai, Na Phra That, Prachan, Maharat, Thai Wang, Ratchabophit, Bamrung Mueang and sections of Charoen Krung.

Later This Year

The Royal Barge Procession will be scheduled before November.

During the week 1 to 6 May, roads in the vicinity of the Grand Palace will be closed and marine transport will be restricted on some sections of the Chao Phraya River.

Tour companies have issued advisories reminding clients that tours of the Grand Palace and nearby temples such as Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha) and Wat Po have been cancelled during the coronation week.
