Bali volcano erupts on Easter Sunday

-

DENPASAR, 22 April 2019: Volcanic ash rained down on parts of Bali following an eruption of Mount Agung that occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

A Jakarta Post report said ash had fallen in Klungkung, Bangli, Denpasar, Badung and Tabanan on Sunday morning following the eruption of Mount Agung in Karangasem.

Up until Sunday, tourists had been visiting Mount Agung on daily pilgrimages to take photos of the iconic peak, many of them hiring motorbikes for the 50 km road excursion.

But authorities warned visitors on Sunday morning to stay clear of the mountain reminding them that under the level three of a four-stage warning system the no-go zone was 4 km from the crater.

Bali’s international airport remains open with no disruption of flights throughout Sunday.

Officials said tourist destinations including the beach resorts and the hill resort of Ubud remained safe.
