Vietnam reports robust travel figures

HANOI, 22 March 2019: International visitors to Vietnam for the first two months of the year totalled 3,089,927 million an increase of 8% year-on-year.

In February, tourist arrivals reached 1,588,161 up 5.8% over the same month last year.

China remains the top market for the first two months with 889,888 arrivals although the market registered a slight decline of 1.3% year-on-year.

The top markets remain largely unchanged with second-placed South Korea supplying 772,182 visits an increase of 24.6%.

Trips from the USA, the third highest market for the two months, clocked 158,081 up 7%, possibly due to travel linked to the Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi.

Japan a steady performer in fourth place supplied 150,822 representing a 9.5% improvement, while Russia supplied 146,738 visits up 4% to take it to fifth place. Last year Asian markets took the top five places based on supplying tourist arrivals.

There are signs that emerging secondary markets are performing better with double-digit increases over the first two months.

For examples, visits from the Philippines grew 23.4% to reach 28,698 a performance in part attributed to the impact of new direct airline services between the two countries.

Other markets that recorded double-digit increases included Hong Kong up 18.3%, Indonesia 13.2% and Thailand’s outbound travel market recording a whopping 36% growth.

The growth out of Thailand could be due to the increase in flights to emerging destinations in Vietnam from Bangkok and Chiang Mai. New direct services have been introduced to Dalat, Cam Ranh and Phu Quoc, while more flights to Danang have been added

Markets in Europe such as Norway, Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden all saw double-digit growth in visits to Vietnam.
