HONG KONG, 8 March 2019: Rising rapidly to 2.2 million trips in 2017, Hong Kong’s outbound travel to Japan stalled in 2018.

Why? Most likely a string of natural disasters caused the blimp, according to the organisers of Hong Kong’s travel trade show, International Travel Expo that is hosted annually in June.

In an assessment of outbound travel, the show organisers claimed Hong Kong’s outbound package tour revenue in 2018 expanded by 8.1% in 2018. For tour bookings during Spring Festival, this year, short-haul trips saw 5% more travellers with no price changes, and long haul travel grew 10% despite cost increase of 5% to 10%.

With 7.4 million people living in Hong Kong, residents spend USD25.5 billion on outbound in 2017, up 5.8%.

In a survey carried out late last year, 1002 Hong Kong resident said they named Japan, Singapore and South Korea as their top three popular Asian destinations.

Japan is also the top destination based on Airbnb Hong Kong bookings for holidays during Spring Festival this year.

Media reports recently claimed 80% of visitors to Hokkaido’s top ski resorts came from Asia and remarkable two thirds of them were from Hong Kong.

Japan’s travel and hospitality suppliers will field a strong delegation at ITE Hong Kong having already booked 80 to 90 booths.

ITE in 2018, during two trade days attracted 12,460 buyers and visitors (6,580 from travel agents & 2,567 MICE; 9,000 from Hong Kong & 2,600 from China).

During the two public days over 9,0000 travel consumers visited the show.

ITE draw 2,000 buyers and trade visitors from the nine top Guangdong cities like Shenzhen and Gaungzhou of the Great Bay Area, which has a combined GDP of nearly USD1.5 trillion and 70 million people. A new bridge and high-speed train extension should draw more Guangdong visitors to ITE this year.

The 33rd ITE Hong Kong 2019, organised by TKS Exhibition Services will be held 13 to 16 June at Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
