Hanoi builds F1 city circuit

-

HANOI, 22 March 2019: Government officials here in Hanoi confirmed construction has commenced on an F1 circuit in the capital’s Nam Tu Liem district.

The circuit will cover 5.5km in distance with 22 turns. It will stretch over a part of the My Dinh Sports Complex, while one section on a public road.

Designed by the Formula One Group and Tilke, a German company, it will meet technical and safety requirements as stated by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

In addition, an area has been allocated for the construction of a control centre, a grandstand, warehouse, parking lot and helipads to serve racing teams and spectators.

The track should be completed by early March 2020, about one month before the race is hosted in Hanoi during April.

Vietnam will be the third Southeast Asian country to have hosted an F1 race, after Malaysia and Singapore. As of this year, Malaysia no longer hosts F1 races.

This year there are 21 races with three in Asia; Shanghai China, Suzuka Japan, and Singapore. In 2020, Hanoi will be the 22nd race venue if all race venues renew contracts. Five venues are up for renewal.

Vietnam signed a 10-year contract with F1 with an option to enter talks on renewal on completion of eight races.
