Langkawi hosts international regatta

LANGKAWI, 15 January 2019:  The 17th Royal Langkawi International Regatta, 8 to 12 January, attracted a record turnout as Team Hollywood lifted the prestigious Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy.

The annual event positions the popular island as a yachting destination and after 17 editions, the event is a popular favourite on the island’s calendar, alongside the Tour de Langkawi, a weeklong cycle race.

This year saw a 34% increase in teams that took part prompting the organisers to tell Sailworld media they now looked forward to another successful regatta in 2020 with races making for a colourful spectacle in the bay adjacent to Kuah Harbour.

Organised by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club the 2019 regatta saw 35 new participants join veteran sailors from eight countries – Australia, United Kingdom, the US, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and Thailand.

They competed in seven classes – Racing Class, IRC 1, IRC 2, Sportsboat, Club Cruising, Multihull, and White Sail.

Trophies and awards were given for the winners of the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy (Racing Class), LADA-International Racing Class Challenge Trophy (IRC 1 Class), RLIR-International Racing Class Challenge Trophy (IRC 2 Class), Commodore’s Challenge Cup (Club Cruising Class), Langkawi Sports Trophy (Sportsboat Class), as well as the Malaysia Multihull Challenge Cup (Multihull Class).

RLIR 2019 was organised in partnership with Tourism Malaysia, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia, the Malaysia Sailing Association and the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA).
