Vietnam’s 2018 target within reach

Hanoi, 10 October 2018: Vietnam attracted 11,616,490 tourist arrivals during the first nine months of the year, an increase of 22.9% year-to-date.

Reporting on September’s performance, Vietnam National Tourism Administration said international visitors reached 1,212,597 up 24.2% over the same month last year.

During the last quarter, October to December, the country will need to generate just short of 4 million visitors to reach the year-end target of 15.5 million.

In 2017 the country welcomed 12.9 million visitors, while officials said they were “cautiously optimistic” that the 15.5 million target was within reach for 2018 based on booking trends.

The five top supply markets have remained constant for nine months. China continues to lead by a big margin with 3,809,395 visitors an increase of 29.7%.

It is understood groups that were destined for Thailand, July through to September, were diverted to Vietnam after the tragic boat accident in Phuket in early July.

Japan was the second highest supplier for the nine months with 623,701 visitors, a gain of 4.2%.

The USA in third place supplied 528,634 visitors, up 14.1% and just ahead of Taiwan, which supplied 527,699 visitors, an increase of 15.1%

Traditionally a strong market for Vietnam since the country opened to tourism, Russia was in fifth place with 454,985 visitors an increase of 8.2%.
