SINGAPORE, 31 May 2018: Bali managed to figure in TripAdvisor’s top 10 most excellent destinations, the only Asian destination to be recognised on the global list.
The rest of the ‘top-10 cities overall’ hailed from North America and Europe.
TripAdvisor announced, Wednesday, its lists of “Most Excellent” tourism destinations across the world for both cities and countries.
The lists identified destinations that have the highest percentage of TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence recipients.
Now in its eighth year, the Certificate of Excellence is given to accommodation, restaurants and travel experiences that deliver great service and consistently achieve high traveller reviews on TripAdvisor.
The winners this year are listed under both cities and countries and sub-divided into specific sectors; accommodation, restaurants and travel experience plus an overall positioning.
Apart from its seventh placing in the overall cities list, Bali also excelled with a third place in the cities list for the most excellent restaurants.
In the most excellent accommodation city category Singapore was the highest placed Asian destination (5th), while Taipei was named 10th.
Under the excellent countries overall listing surprisingly not a single Asian country figured in the top 10. European countries dominated the list with the single exception of Morocco.
Under the countries listing for excellent restaurants European nations conquered all 10 slots.
Singapore was named top of the countries list for excellent accommodation, while Indonesia was 10.th
In ninth place, Thailand joined the countries list for an excellent travel experience, but lost out to Vietnam that managed sixth spot in the same list. The top country for an excellent travel experience was Iceland.
“When travellers see a Certificate of Excellence sticker or certificate on display, they immediately know that the business has a track record for offering highly rated guest experiences,” said TripAdvisor vice president, brand marketing Neela Pal. “Now our ‘Most Excellent’ lists reveal the destinations where travellers are most likely to encounter these excellent businesses.”
The lists should be viewed as a conversation starter, rather than a definitive statement on quality or excellence.

“Most Excellent” Methodology
¹“Most Excellent” cities and countries were calculated as a percentage of businesses listed on TripAdvisor that received a Certificate of Excellence recognition within that destination during the qualifying period. Cities must have had a minimum of 1,000 businesses (i.e., accommodations, restaurants, experiences) listed on TripAdvisor. Country markets must have had a minimum of 5,000 businesses listed on TripAdvisor.
