PENANG: In a bid to reduce long queues, the Thai consulate in Penang will handle a maximum of 100 visa applications daily, effective 14 May.
The daily ceiling on visa applications was announced by the consulate on its Facebook last week.
No reason was given, but the consulate has been unable to deal with the unusually high volume of applications, which results in hours of queuing and considerable complaints.
The consulate in Penang has traditionally been popular with foreigners living in Thailand who need to exit the country to obtain a new visa.
As of 14 May, visa applicants will get a numbered queue coupon with a maximum of 100 issued daily.
In addition, the Facebook notice advised visa applicants that they would not be able to enter the building and queue if their documents were in complete.
The consulate warned visa applicants that if they have a history of overstaying in Thailand there was a strong likelihood that their application would be rejected.
