Ministry peps up forecast

-

BANGKOK, 26 February 2018: It’s easy to be critical of Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports for limiting its communications to just the Thai language.

It might even argue that its role does not extend to building global awareness, or providing accurate information to agencies and organisations outside of the country.

However, data and reports translated to major foreign languages would be appreciated by organisations that are checking investment opportunities particularly in Thailand’s hospitality sector.

They shouldn’t have to invest in expensive translations just to gain an accurate assessment of the country’s travel industry’s health. It should be documented for a global audience in various major languages.

But if you take the trouble to study the Ministry’s monthly report with the accompany graphs you will probably conclude there are elements that would suggest the ministry is making improvements to present timely overviews of the nation’s tourism, but it wouldn’t hurt if the ministry drew some meaningful conclusions to indicate the way forward for the industry.

The January tourist arrivals and spend report, released last week, included a smattering of conclusions in a “travel forecast” sourced from Forward Keys an agency that tracks literally millions of booking records daily.

Adopting popular weather forecast terminology Forward Keys noted that India was one of the sunny spots for Thailand’s travel industry to tap this year.

“India’s outbound is bright sunshine with another warm front created by growth in both aviation capacity and economic growth.”

Russia is a mixed bag delivering a “visitor tsunami and an outbound drought predicted to coincide with the hosting of the FIFA World Cup.”

Outbound travel from Argentina, Brazil and Chile is warming up and Forward Keys forecasts “double digit growth in Q1.”

China’s outbound travel is predictably “extended sunny periods, a serendipitous combination of economic growth and increased aviation capacity.”

If you had to put you money on markets worth exploring then India would top the list possibly to offset a decline in visits in the summer months, June and July, when Russia hosts the World Cup.

    • no guts to make the numbers known in other languages. that’s all

  2. If you look back the old days, TAT made all the data and statistics before this job had been transferred to MoTS , TAT had made the tourism data and statistic year book and it was quite favorable details for everyone who had received the said report and if you still own that one you can check it out.
