Citi Travel suspended

-

SINGAPORE 29 January 2018: Citi Travels and Tours has been suspended from conducting the business of a travel agency according to a Singapore Tourist Board announcement late last week.

Citi Travels & Tours Pte Ltd with the travel agent licence number 02346 was officially suspended 10 January until further notice, in accordance with the Travel Agents Act (Chapter 334).

During the suspension period, Citi Travels & Tours is required to fulfil its existing obligations to its customers but will not be allowed to accept new travel bookings, STB stated.

The travel company had the right of appeal to submit documents in its defence until 24 January. [1]

The suspension is a result of the company’s failure to submit its audited statement of accounts within six months after the close of the financial year. In addition, STB also found that the travel agency had failed to fulfil its obligations to a customer.

The submission of audited accounts is a requirement under the Travel Agents Regulations. A failure to submit the audited accounts, within the stipulated deadline raises concern over the company’s ability to meet the minimum financial requirements as mandated under the Travel Agents Regulations.

STB takes a dim view of errant travel agents and says it  will not hesitate to take necessary actions to protect the reputation of Singapore’s travel industry. It is the only national body in ASEAN to update travel consumers and the trade concerning the status of the country’s registered travel agencies.

[1] In accordance with the Travel Agents Act, Citi Travels was given until 24 Jan 2018 to submit any appeal against the suspension to the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).
