Pattaya: Beach boozing banned

PATTAYA, 26 September 2017: Boozing by the seaside will be banned at Pattaya’s beaches, 1 October, as the resort tries to clean up its tourist image.

According to the Pattaya Mail, beach vendors attended a meeting, last week, organised by the city’s sanitation chief, Wasinpat Chimtim.

The Pattaya Mail said about 50 beach chair vendors from Jomtien and Pattaya beaches attended the meeting where the no-alcohol rules were spelt out along with a “slew of new regulations in advance of an International Fleet Review in November.

Government and city officials are keen to clean up the resort’s tardy image and believe the resort can be rehabilitated into a prosperous city by the sea especially for Asian tourists.

The ban on selling booze on the beach is to give the resort a family friendly image.

Vendors have been told to switch to selling Thai snacks and soft drinks.  They must wear aprons and rent the beach chairs themselves rather than leasing the chairs and beach plot from a third party. Vendors have to bid for the right to offer beach chairs at specified beach plots.

The local newspaper said it believed the project was part of a campaign to give the resort a favourable image ahead of the marine event.
