Quality list aids travel

BANGKOK, 7 August 2017: Thailand’s Department of Tourism reports 673 establishments in 2016 passed evaluation and were accredited under the Thailand Tourism Standard scheme.

Released last week on the department’s website, the list identified establishments that had achieved the standard in the categories of accommodation, services, activities, attractions, tour business and tour guiding.

The scheme’s list, written in Thai, was introduced to raise standards and upgrade the country’s tourism businesses. It is geared to assisting domestic tourists to identify quality services, while building their travel confidence.

Entrepreneurs who met the qualification are authorised to use the standard’s emblems for marketing campaigns.

The department’s list is in just Thai language, which allows domestic tourists to identify quality products and their providers but international tourist are none the wiser. The only exception is the hotel category which identifies hotels that reached the standard using their English language names. As for the rest of the categories the list requires a translation service.

The categories cover homestay, food, adventure tourism, shops, long-stay services, attractions, elephant camps and transport.

Of the more than 600 establishments and services recognised,  53 venues are city-style hotels, 56 resorts and 52 homestays.

Other major categories include 85 tourist guides, 83 halal food services, 50 food and beverage outlets, 25 gem stores, 25 souvenir shops and 15 commuter van transport services.
