Pattaya marathon reboots

PATTAYA, 7 August 2017: Pattaya City joins hands with Provincial Chonburi Administrative Organisation, Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Athletic Association of Thailand to organise the 26th Pattaya Marathon 2017, 3 September.

The event was supposed to take place 16 July, but Pattaya City could not secure core sponsors and an organiser in time, according to the Pattaya Marathon website.

It has now been rescheduled for Sunday, 3 September, with the start and finish line on Pattaya Beach Road.

The marathon is viewed as a promotional tool to raise Pattaya’s tourism image and help to position the city-by-the sea as a family resort with a packed calendar of events and festivals.

The race will have five distance categories — marathon 42.195 km, half marathon 21.100 km, quarter marathon 10.550 km, micro marathon 3.7 km and wheelchair 3.7 km.

The registration opens today, 7 August until 25 August. To register visit

Entry fees for Thais are: THB800 for the full marathon; THB600 half marathon; THB400 quarter marathon; THB300 micro marathon; and free for wheelchair participants.

Entry fees for foreigners are: THB2,100 (USD60) for the marathon; THB1,700 (USD50) half marathon; THB1,020 (USD30) quarter marathon; THB680 (USD20)  micro marathon; and free for wheelchair participants.

The fees for foreigners are considerably more expensive than for local entrants. Dual pricing usually discourages international participation in sports events of this nature, due to the lack of added value to justify the difference in price. There is very little tour packaging of this event by land tour operators, who might have been able to negotiate a more attractive registration fee, or reduce the impact of higher fees by adding other features or incentives.
