Cebu identified in latest terror warning

MANILA, 11 April 2017: Travel advisories are warning travellers that there is credible information that terror groups are planning kidnappings in Cebu and Bohol provinces in the Philippines.

Cebu is a popular tourist destination with Asian travellers,  noted for its cultural and heritage sites.

The home-base of Cebu Pacific Airlines,  Cebu island province extends 196 km north to south and faces the island province of Bohol.

The original warning was released by US Embassy in Manila and then picked up by other travel advisory services.

The US embassy said had received “unsubstantiated, yet credible information that terrorist groups may attempt to conduct kidnappings in central Visayas, which includes both Cebu and Bohol provinces.”

The US embassy warned that “extremists have targeted sporting events, theatres, markets, mass transportation systems–including airlines, and other public venues where large crowds gather. Crowded nightclubs, shopping malls, buses and popular restaurants have also been targets.”

Travellers are warned that if they are planning to visit Cebu, or Bohol, they should exercise heightened vigilance and review personal security plans.

Travel advisories are recommended travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in the Philippines overall.
