KUALA LUMPUR, 15 February 2017: The Chapman’s Challenge 2017 – a biathlon run sponsored by Pangkor Laut Resort, returns for its second year, with its race day on 13 May.
The sporting event marks the 72th anniversary of Colonel Spencer Chapman’s escape from the island that was under the control of the Japanese military during World War II.
The Chapman’s Challenge, crafted to commemorate the British commando’s adventure on the island, is an annual race comprising of a 6.2 km run around the private island’s roadways and through a rainforest and concludes with a 1 km swim in Emerald Bay before concluding at the resort’s Chapman’s Bar.
On 13 May 1945, he made his last escape from Emerald Bay at Pangkor Laut with his compatriot, Major R. Broome.
They swam out to sea in the dark of night to be rescued by the Royal Navy submarine, HMS Statesman.
