HO CHI MINH CITY, 7 February 2017: Jetstar Airways will start direct flights, this May, connecting Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, with Vietnam’s commercial capital, Ho Chi Minh City.
Flights from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City will commence, 10 May, and flights from Sydney the following day, subject to government and regulatory approval.
According to the airline, once the new route is established, Jetstar Airways will be only low-cost carrier to fly direct to the popular Southeast Asian destination using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Jetstar Group CEO, Jayne Hrdlicka, said Vietnam is one of the fastest growing holiday destinations in Southeast Asia.
“Vietnam has the potential to become as popular as Bali or Thailand for Australian travellers…the country is well known for its rich culture, vibrant cities, beaches and cuisine, and travellers can take advantage of the wide range of experiences the region has to offer.”
From Ho Chi Minh City, travellers can fly to 15 other destinations within Vietnam on Jetstar Pacific, she said.
It’s expected the new route will also stimulate inbound tourism to Australia. In the last 12 months, there has been a 21% increase in visitors from Vietnam to Australia .
Vietnam’s outbound market is growing at a faster pace than its inbound travel arrivals prompting experts to say that will it will join Singapore and Malaysia as a top supplier for outbound travel over the next three years.
