Krabi welcomes Qatar flight

DOHA, 7 December 2016: Qatar Airways becomes the first Middle Eastern airline to serve Krabi a popular beach destination in South Thailand.

Qatar Airways now serves three destinations in Thailand and will start a service to Chiang Mai in 2017.

Located on the mainland facing the Andaman Sea, Krabi is the gateway to Phi Phi Island and is  an emerging as alternative destination to Phuket that is suffering from over crowding and pollution.

The first flight to Krabi using an Airbus A330-200 arrived from Doha, yesterday and was greeted by a water salute to usher in the four weekly service.

Qatar Airways is the first Middle East airline to provide scheduled services to Krabi.

The service offers a one-stop flights from Europe making it possible for European tourists to reach the southern Thai resort conveniently and saving the need to connect with a domestic flight in Bangkok. The roundtrip fare from Europe is around UKP450.

The airline noted that travellers can now enjoy year-round services to visit what it called the “incredible Phi Phi National Park” famed for stunning land and seascapes, diving, national parks and eco-tours. Krabi is the closest mainland destination to Phi Phi island.

However, the island has been irreparably damaged by its popularity suffering from over-building that has turned the once attractive twin bays, that almost touch each other at the centre of the island, into an urban squaller.

“Additionally, the new service to Krabi opens up a host of global destinations for the people of Krabi and the region, the airline said in its media release.”

“Last year, Thailand received more than 39,000 tourists from Qatar and the new route will provide connectivity for travellers coming from other parts of the GCC, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.”

Krabi becomes the third destination in Thailand served by Qatar Airways  after Phuket (2010) and Bangkok (1996). It will start direct services from its hub, Hamad International Airport, in Doha, to Chiang Mai in 2017.

It offers flights to 150 key business and leisure destinations across six continents from its home base.

This year,  Qatar Airways also launched services to Adelaide (Australia), Atlanta (US), Birmingham (UK), Boston (US), Helsinki, (Finland), Los Angeles (USA), Marrakech (Morocco), Pisa (Italy), Ras Al Khaimah (UAE), Sydney (Australia), Windhoek (Namibia) and Yerevan (Armenia). Services to Seychelles will follow later this month.
