COLOMBO, 29 June 2016: SriLankan will suspend flights to Frankfurt and Paris at the start of its winter timetable, effective 1 November.
The last flights to Europe will arrive in Frankfurt and Paris 30 October. After that, SriLankan will serve Europe through its codeshare partners Etihad and Qatar, through the Abu Dhabi and Doha gateways.
Passengers who have bought tickets for travel on the two routes with a departure on 1 November or later will be given the option of a refund or a transfer to a codeshare flight through the airline’s partners.
The airline failed to compete effectively with Middle East airlines that can offer more attractive fares and one-stop services to more European cities via their home bases in the Middle East.
SriLankan says it will add more services to Abu Dhabi and Doha. Its daily flight to London will remain for the time being. That route has traditionally been a core revenue contributor for the airline due to the country’s historical links with the UK.
But there is also heavy competition from Middle East airlines on all major routes to the UK.
