WTTC introduces tell a travel story

LONDON, 28 September 2017: The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) joined the UNWTO in the celebration of World Tourism Day in Qatar, Wednesday.

The special day highlighted the economic, social and environmental contribution of travel and tourism to sustainable development around the world.

WTTC President & CEO Gloria Guevara said: “Travel & Tourism is a remarkable sector, it brings people from different backgrounds, culture and beliefs closer together, driving peace, in addition to the significant socioeconomic benefits to a country’s welfare and local livelihoods. Read more

Universal accessibility rises on travel radar

BANGKOK, 29 September 2016: Pacific Asia Travel Association has upgraded its website to be disability friendly in a move to meet universal accessibility guidelines.

“The criteria are not easy to meet,” PATA CEO, Mario Hardy, told TTR Weekly on the sidelines of World Tourism Day celebrations held in Bangkok, 27 September.

“We are not 100% compliant with all the requirements, but it is an achievement we are proud of, as only 3% of websites worldwide meet accessibility guidelines.” Read more

Tourism for All pledge

BANGKOK, 27 September 2016: Thailand will embark on a campaign to make its tourist destinations more accessible friendly to disabled travellers, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, told a media seminar on the eve of World Tourism Day.

Speaking at the seminar, held Monday, at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University she identified plans to establish a cluster of eight tourist destinations in Thailand that would take the lead in the adoption of universal accessibility across the country.

“We will start with Khon Kaen, the site of a field trip for World Tourism Day delegates this week,” she told the audience, noting she had just returned from a site inspection in the Northeast city to assess its readiness to welcome travellers with disabilities. Read more

UNWTO event builds confidence

BANGKOK, 30 August 2016: World Tourism Day, hosted for the first time in Bangkok, 27 September, will give Thailand an opportunity to demonstrate travel confidence has fully recovered after the 12 August bomb attacks.

Established in 1970 to mark the day the statutes of the UNWTO were signed, World Tourism Day is an annual event and since 1997 UNWTO has selected a member country to share in its hosting.

Tourism Authority of Thailand’s governor, Yuthasak Surpasorn, had said earlier in the month in a TAT Newsroom press release: “TAT is seeking cabinet approval for a special long-holiday weekend in September.”  (Saturday 24 September through to Tuesday 27 September). Read more

Thailand hosts World Tourism Day

BANGKOK, 11 April 2016: Ministry of Tourism and Sports says Thailand is ready to host World Tourism Day 2016, 26 to 28 September.

The Thai Cabinet ratified the proposal submitted by Ministry of Tourism and Sports, late last year,  to confirm Thailand as the official host of World Tourism Day 2016.

Last September, Thailand and Qatar were selected to be the official host countries for World Tourism Day (WTD) in 2016 and 2017 respectively, at the 21st UNWTO General Assembly in Medellín, Colombia. Read more
