HCMC to share tourism benefits

HO CHI MIN CITY, 19 July 2011-Vientnam’s commercial capital Ho Chi Minh City will strengthen ties with nearby provinces to build tourism products and encourage more international arrivals.
Last week, the municipal government vice chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Hong, said the strategy was to build the southern city into a major tourism hub that spread the benefits of tourism to nearby provinces to build length of stay and broaden the attractions base of the city’s tourism industry.
The plan is to survey and build routes that link the city with provinces in the South to offer more tour options for visitors.
Vietnam introduces new tourism year

HANOI, 15 December 2010 — Vietnam will launch a new tourism year promotion,1 April in Phu Yen, a coastal province in the central region about 400 km from the well-known beach destination, Danang.
In addition to Phu Yen, the anchor destination for Vietnam Year – Phu Yen 2011, activities are planned in other coastal provinces including Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Danang City. Provinces in the central highlands and major cities in Vietnam will also organise events throughout the year.
Laos rethinks rail project

BANGKOK, 9 November 2010 – The Lao government will cancel a joint venture project with Thailand to extend the Nong Khai rail track into the capital city Vientiane, Thai officials confirmed Monday.
Lao government officials reason the Thai-Lao rail extension will duplicate a high speed train project between China and Thailand that passes through Laos.

Private company hits a bus snag

BANGKOK, 22 October 2010 – A Nakhon Phanom-based company will not be able to operate an international bus service to neighbouring Laos and Vietnam due to a Ministry of Transport rule that reserves international bus services to state enterprise companies.
The company announced, earlier this month, that it was ready to start a service once the third Mekong bridge, 6 km north of Nakhon Phanom, opens late next year. However, days after the announcement the company admitted it faced opposition from the Ministry of Transport.
Qatar wades into Vietnam market with discounts

BANGKOK, 19 October 2010 — Backing up its new services to Vietnamese cities — Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City via Bangkok due to commence 1 November – Qatar Airways sells promotional web fares for both economy and business class until 15 December.
The deals are currently the cheapest among legacy airlines, except Air France’s Hanoi and Lufthansa’s Ho Chi Minh City promotional economy fares.
QR’s fares are also attractive even when compared to low-cost carrier, Thai AirAsia, when extra comforts are taken into account.

Vietnam air traffic rises

HO CHI MINH CITY, 15 October 2010 —Airline passengers increased more than 20% during the first nine months of 2010, according to Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam.
According to local press reports, earlier this week, the administration estimated that roughly 15 million passengers checked through the country’s airports in the first nine months of this year, of which Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific and Vietnam Air Service Co (Vasco) accounted for more than 11 million passengers.
