BANGKOK, 4 November 2010 — Natural disasters will cost Thailand’s tourism industry about Bt50 billion in lost revenue, the Tourism Council of Thailand estimated yesterday.
Most of the estimated loss was attributed to the Hat Yai floods alone that devastated the southern town earlier this week.
TCT mulls over master plan

BANGKOK, 24 September 2010 – Tourism Council of Thailand’s newly elected committee outlined a two-year plan, last Monday, to create a strategic plan for tourism development.
The private sector’s generated strategy will be ambitious promising a 20 to 30% growth in visitors over three years, 2013 to 2018, TCT stated at a press briefing.
TCT new president, Piyaman Tejapaibul, outlined the framework, but said detailed action plans would still need to be hammered out by committee members. The new president was elected, 26 August, and her optimistic assessment of the future surprised industry critics. She identified key points of the strategy during the briefing:

BANGKOK, 31 August 2010 – Managing director of Holiday Inn Resort Regent Cha-am, Piyaman Tejapaibul, was elected for a two-year term as the new president of TCT, replacing Kongkrit Hiranyakit.
The election took place, last week, in Bangkok at the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s head office.
Tasked with co-ordinating policy and projects between private sector associations and the government, the council has 68 ordinary members and 121 associate members.
THAI PM vows support

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has pledged to support tourism, but concedes the country has lost as many as 2 million tourists a year through failed policies and political discord in the past.
Recognising tourism as an important economic driver, he said the industry had to grow at a much faster pace. He believes one of the catalysts will be a government investment in fast rail services linking Bangkok with destinations in the north, the eastern seaboard, the south and northeast.
Index forecasts travel recovery

BANGKOK, 21 July 2010 –- The first Thailand Tourism Confidence Index shows tourism-related business operators are optimistic that tourism is now on the road to recovery.
Thailand Tourism Confidence Index was derived from two sources – the Tourism Situation and Forecast of Tourist Behavior and the Confidence Index of Thailand’s Tourism Industry Project.
They are researched and produced under the supervision of the Tourism Council of Thailand, Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Faculty of Economics at Chulalongkorn University.
TCT stands firm on recovery

BANGKOK, 16 July 2010 – Foreign tourists, this year, could reach 15.5 million generating about Bt540 billion for the Thai tourism industry, Thailand’s National News Bureau reported this morning.
Quoting Tourism Council of Thailand, chairman, Kongkrit Hiranyakit, the report stated tourism could grow by 5 to 10% and based on that estimate suggested it was reasonable to expect Bt16.7 million visits in 2011.
Tourism Council revises 2010 estimate

BANGKOK, 7 July 2010 – The Tourism Council of Thailand has revised its earlier estimates on tourists arrivals this year, claiming the country could achieve a 5 to 10% on last year’s performance according to a National News Bureau report.
Shortly after the two-month red-shirt protests ended 19 May, the council said it feared arrivals could fall to below 13 million from 14.1 million in 2009.
TCT misquoted in foreign press
The Tourism Council of Thailand’s statements on how the crisis management centre would respond, if there was serious unrest in Bangkok in late February, were taken out of context.
