World expo bid still on track

BANGKOK, 18 October 2011 – Thailand’s bid to host World Expo 2020 remains on track despite serious flooding that has inundated most of Ayutthaya province for almost a month.

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau president Akapol Sorasuchart gave the assurances, Monday, when asked if this year’s flooding would prompt a rethink on the venue linked to the country’s bid to host the 2020 expo.

“ We don’t think the flood will impact on our bid,” said. “The proposed expo site near the Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre has suffered little flooding.” Read more

TCEB signs MoU

BANGKOK, 13 October 2011 – Thailand Conventions and Exhibition Bureau has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Negotiations, under the Ministry of Finance, to help prepare the events business for ASEAN free-trade agreements due to come into play in 2015.

TCEB president, Akapol Sorasuchart, said: “The AEC free trade era will impact on Thailand’s MICE industry. We need to improve skills through MICE associations so we can compete with skilled labour that will move to our country.”

Department of Negotiations general director Srirat Rastapana concluded the agreement would lead to four areas of cooperation. Read more

TCEB woos more exhibitions

BANGKOK, 23 September 2011 – Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau launched a Bt85 million project, The Next Best Shows,  to draw more exhibitions to Thailand and generate Bt14,billion in tourism related revenue by 2014.

TCEB will spend Bt85 million supporting new exhibitions with Bt22 million in 2012; Bt25 million in 2013 and Bt38 million in 2014.

Initially, it is understood 20 exhibitions could qualify, but it was not explained if they were new exhibitions, or companies already hosting events in the country. Read more

TCEB makes MICE hubs

UBON RATCHATHANI, 1 September 2011 -  Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau’s MICE-Believe in Thailand project, is expanding to include Ubon Ratchathani.

The campaign has a lofty objective to promote the northeast town as an events hub for the Greater Mekong Sub-region. The town is about 100 km west from the border with southern Laos and 150 km north of the Cambodian border. There are no large towns in either of the two neighbouring countries that could deliver delegates to events in Ubon.

TCEB president, Akapol Sorasuchart, explains the strategy claiming it will upgrade the “business model and boost the overall economy at macro level,” which in turn will help boost Thailand’s share of the international MICE market. Read more

Ministry slashes D-MICE budget

BANGKOK, 25 August 2011 – Association of Domestic Travel says the government should make domestic tourism a priority rather than focusing entirely on international tourist markets.

ADT president, Maiyarat Pheerayakoses, says  more attention should be given to domestic tourism because Thai tourists sustain tourist destinations year-round.

“Domestic tourism is a significant factor driving the country’s economy that the government should respect and give recognition to in its policies at least on the same level as developing international travel markets,” Ms Maiyarat said.

TCEB champions world expo bid

BANGKOK, 23 August 2011 – Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau launched its latest campaign “World Expo 2020: Believe in Thailand”, last week to build public awareness for the bid.

TCEB president, Akapol Sorasuchart, said it was important to raise public awareness and understanding, nationwide, and unite the Thai people to support this event in Ayutthaya.

TCEB taps Chinese MICE visitors

BANGKOK, 15 August 2011 – Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau says it can expand up-scale events bookings from China by another 18% by year-end to make up for a possible short fall in bookings from the United States and Europe.

TCEB has been forced to rethink its emphasis on the US and Europe following a financial crisis that threatens discretional spending in both those markets.

TCEB president, Akapol Sorasuchart, said China was big enough to deliver a substantial growth for Thailand’s MICE industry as it is second only to India in bookings within Asia. Read more

TCEB showcases World Expo pavilion

BANGKOK, 12 August 2011 – Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau will use the BOI Fair 2011, 10 to 21 November, to showcase its proposed World Expo 2020 pavilion.

The fair will be held at Impact Muang Thong Thani and TCEB hopes it can build public support for its bid to host the mega event.

TCEB president, Akapol Sorasuchart, said the launch of the Expo 2020 pavilion at BOI Fair 2011 would showcase Thailand’s candidacy and capability to host the World Expo 2020. Read more

Hu Hin hot for luxury MICE

BANGKOK, 5 August 2011 -Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau has selected Hua Hin, in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, as its top resort destination suitable to attract “luxury MICE” business.

TCEB president, Akapol Sorasuchart, said according to the new luxury MICE campaign which was launched, last May, Hua Hin was designated a priority area to focus on high-end European MICE visitors, through its Believe in Thailand campaign and marketing roadshows.

He said Europe was a major long-haul market for Thailand’s tourism and MICE industries accounting for about 13% of overall MICE visitors to the country. Read more

TCEB taps social media

BANGKOK, 2 August 2011-Under the umbrella of Believe in Thailand campaign Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau hosted a seminar “From Social Media to Social Commerce for MICE”, late last week.

TCEB president, Akapol Sorasuchart, said social media was now the most effective tool especially for the business-to-business platform.

“Many  business corporations have already jumped on the social media bandwagon in order to engage in two-way conversations with their customers and drive business success,” Mr Akapol said. Read more
