Rainforest festival spotlights Welsh music

KUCHING, 7 July 2017: Music lovers attending the 20th Rainforest World Music Festival will be entertained by a Welsh music legend.

The annual festival, considered the top World Music event in Asia, will be staged on the weekend  14 to 16 July.

The 2016 Rainforest World Music Festival recorded a staggering 18,340 people in attendance over the festival’s three days. The gate tally represented an increase of 2% over the previous year. Ticket sales for the festival also increased 14%. Read more

Sarawak bags marketing award

KUCHING, 29 March 2017: The Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) has honoured Sarawak Tourism with a Silver Adrian Award for travel marketing excellence in public relations.

The Adrian Awards claim to be the “largest and most prestigious global travel marketing competition”.

Sarawak Tourism, which promotes and markets Sarawak as a globally recognised destination for culture, adventure and nature visitation, won the 2016 Adrian Award for its public relations work for the Rainforest World Music Festival. Read more

Sarawak draws business events

KUCHING, 21 November 2016: Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) celebrates 10 years of promoting events business across this popular east Malaysian state.

Business events have expanded a fast rate with 59 conferences hosted last year representing an attendance of 17,910 international delegates.

The bureau estimates the events generated MYR32.6 million in direct delegate expenditure in 2015. Read more

Cycling in the footsteps of White Rajahs

SINGAPORE, 3 November 2016: A week-long cycling “Fort-to-Fort” trail launched, earlier in October, by the state’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MTAC) Sarawak and Paradesa Borneo was given an airing at the recent ITB Asia.

The trade show, late October, attracted around 890 buyers and those that visited the Sarawak booth were given a briefing on the new soft adventure travel experiences some of them created by Paradesa Borneo.

The cycle project, co developed with the ministry, identifies a  marketable heritage route for six out of 12 gazetted forts that are linked to the legacy of the Sarawak White Rajahs. Read more

Sarawak woos China charters

SINGAPORE, 1 November 2016: The Sarawak Tourism Board reported, during last month’s ITB Asia, its success in attracting more charter flights to Sarawak, this December through to early 2017.

Commenting on progress to improve airline links to Sarawak, the tourism board told TTR Weekly during an interview at ITB Asia, that Malaysia Airlines plans a series of Chinese New Year charter flights, 27 January from Taiwan.

The flights will accommodate groups  booked by leading tour operators. The flights have a capacity of 162 seats. Read more

STB promotes rainforest music fest

SINGAPORE, 1 November 2016: Sarawak Tourism Board  promoted its famous Rainforest World Music Festival, during ITB Asia, late last month. The festival celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2017.

The 20th installment of the Rainforest World Music Festival will be hosted at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Damai, 14 to 16 July 2017.

According to STB officials attending ITB Asia there are plans to make the festival celebration bigger than ever to mark the 20th anniversary. Read more

Cycle fort-to-fort in Sarawak

KUCHING, 13 May 2016: Paradesa Borneo, an adventure travel company specialising in cycle tours in Sarawak introduced new historical bike tours on a revamped website earlier this week.

Its newest cycle itinerary, adopts the theme of a “fort-to-fort project” developed by the state’s ministry of tourism to identify a heritage route linked to the legacy of the White Rajahs who ruled Sarawak prior to World War II.

Officially launched, last month, by Minister of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia and Ministry of Tourism Sarawak at Square Tower, Kuching Waterfront the ‘Fort to Fort Trail’ links 20 forts built by the White Rajahs over 105 years. Read more

BW takes Plus brand to Kuching

BANGKOK, 15 March 2016: Best Western Hotels & Resorts has signed its first hotel project in Kuching,  a recently added component in a mix-use development, under construction in Sarawak’s state capital.

The 200-room Best Western Plus Kuching will open in 2018.

Managing director international operations Asia, Olivier Berrivin, confirmed the  US hotel group concluded a management contract rather than a franchise agreement on the property. Read more

Singapore supports Sarawak tourism

KUCHING, 11 February 2016: Singapore and Sarawak are strengthening tourism cooperation that should help to develop and promote the key ecotourism attractions in the Malaysian state.

Singapore Cooperation Enterprise, Sarawak’s Land Custody and Development Authority signed off on a MoU that will explore ways to raise the profile of tourism assets and attractions in Sarawak.

LCDA general manager Datu Sulaiman Husaini signed the MoU on behalf of the Sarawak government, while SCE chief executive officer Kong Wy Mun signed for the Singapore government. Read more

Sarawak sees HK as third hub

KUCHING, 11 February 2016: Hong Kong Airlines will start a new service from Hong Kong to Kuching, this April, following an agreement signed last month with the Sarawak Tourism Board.

The board’s chief executive officer, Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, who is also the permanent secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Sarawak, signed on behalf of the board, while Hong Kong Airlines’ assistant director of commercial, Michael Burke, signed for the airline.

Based on the agreement, the airline will start a twice-weekly service to Kuching in late April. Flights will depart Hong Kong every Tuesday and Friday night and return to Hong Kong on the following day. Read more
