Thailand arrivals flying high

BANGKOK, 21 November 2017: Thailand’s tourist industry earned THB1,472,698.81 million from international tourist visits, January to October, an increase of 9.31%, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Tourism and Sport released last week..

Reporting on the latest statistics, Permanent Secretary of Tourism and Sports, Pongpanu Svetarundra, said the country welcomed 2,723,971 visits in October alone.

For the 10 months up to the end of October, the country registered 28.8 million visits, a rise of 6.69%, year-on-year.

Hong Kong hotels enjoy revenue growth

LONDON, 12 October 2017: Despite a supply growth of 3.1% in rooms, Hong Kong hotels enjoyed their first  RevPAR increase for the month of September since 2013.

RevPAR, or revenue per available room, grew 4.5% to HKD1,84.03  for Hong Kong’s hotels.

STR issued what it calls  preliminary data for September, Wednesday,  that showed hotels in Hong Kong have seen rate-driven performance growth. Read more

Strong passenger growth in August

SINGAPORE 10 October 2017: Passenger demand grew  7.2% in August, according to the International Air Transport Association’s latest global traffic data, measured in total revenue passenger km, or RPKs.

At the same time, the upward trend in seasonally-adjusted traffic has eased from that seen at the end of 2016.

August capacity (available seat km or ASKs) increased by 6.3%, and load factor climbed 0.7% percentage points to 84.5%, which was just below the record for the month set in 2015. Read more

Push for Phang Nga airport

PHUKET, 7 August 2017: Thailand’s Phang Nga province recorded an all-time record high 4,475,223 visitors in 2016 as tourism revenue topped USD1.16 billion according to a new report by consulting group C9 Hotelworks.

While the numbers are impressive, the destination’s lack of a gateway airport remains a stumbling block to broader success.

Phang Nga and its leading resort area Khao Lak heavily rely on Phuket’s overloaded international airport as a lifeline. With over 12,000 registered hotel rooms in the province and a burgeoning pipeline of new projects, something has to give. Read more

Global air travel demand grows

GENEVA, 4 August 2017: Demand for global airline travel grew 7.8% in June compared to the year-ago period, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced Thursday.

IATA measures growth in total revenue passenger kilometres or RPKs.

Growth in June was similar to the 7.7% increase achieved in May 7.8% and all regions reported improvements. Seat capacity in the month (available seat kilometres or ASKs) increased by 6.5%, and load factor rose 1% to 81.9%. Read more

Chinese spending spree in Singapore

SINGAPORE, 1 August 2017: Singapore’s international tourist arrivals grew 4% reaching 4.3 million visits, during the first quarter of this year, while tourist receipts reached SGD6.4 billion, up 15% on Q1 2016.

China was top of the pile on two counts; tourist receipts and arrivals.  Tourist receipts earned SGD1,075 million representing an increase of 30% and the China market supplied 851,000 visits, up 14%.

Indonesia was second supplying SGD688 million improving 16% and 720,000 visits, up a marginal 2%. Read more

Laos visits drop 12%

VIENTIANE, 6 June 2017: Lao PDR’s Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism reports the country attracted 1.11 million international tourists during January to March, this year, a decrease of 12% from 1.24 million visits during the same period last year.

The official Lao News Agency reported the first quarter of 2017 saw 763,000 visits from ASEAN markets, which represented an 11% decrease when compared with 866,000 visits in the first quarter of 2016.

Tourists from Europe recorded almost 60,000 down 29% followed by almost 20,000 visits from the Americas (-30%) and 2,100 visits from Africa and the Middle East (-29%). Read more

Lufthansa plays down Q1 loss

FRANKFURT, 2 May 2017: German airline group Lufthansa reported, last week, a much larger net loss in the first three months of the year, but sought to play up a return to positive operating results.

The group reported a net loss of 68 million euros (USD74 million) between January and March, compared with an 8-million-euro loss in the same period last year.

Adjusted operating, or underlying profit stood at 25 million euros, a marked improvement on a 53-million-euro loss in the first quarter of 2016, on the back of revenues up 11.2% at 7.7 billion euros. Read more

Thai tourism outlook bright

BANGKOK, 20 April 2017: Kasikorn Research Centre estimates 11.81 million international travellers will visit Thailand generating THB612 billion during January to April this year.

The bank’s think-tank unit said inbound tourism has been challenged since the beginning of this year due to a slowdown of tourist arrivals particularly from China and mainly so-called zero-dollar tours.

This resulted in a marginal growth of 0.7% in inbound tourism, January to March. Major markets that lifted arrivals in Q1 were Russia, Lao PDR, South Korea and India. Read more
