Domestic tourism to aid recovery

BANGKOK, 18 November 2010 – The Ministry of Tourism and Sports says it will go ahead with a plan to secure funds to support tourism recovery in provinces that were devastated by floods last month.
According to the permanent secretary Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Sombat Kuruphan, the emphasis will be on encouraging domestic tourism.
He claimed any additional funds approved by the Cabinet to support tourism recovery in the provinces would go to the Tourism Authority of Thailand to promote domestic tourism campaigns early next year.

BANGKOK, 1 November 2010 – Tourism will only be successful and capable of delivering an improved performance if there is stronger cooperation between government agencies, Ministry of Tourism and Sports permanent secretary, Sombat Kuruphan, told leading travel agents last Friday.
He was speaking for the first time to members of the Association of Thai Travel Agents who held their monthly meeting at Twin Towers Hotel, Bangkok, last week.
Thailand arrivals could hit 15m target

BANGKOK, 12 October 2010 – Tourist arrivals to Thailand continued an upward swing with a 13.3% growth recorded for the first nine months reaching 11,210,017 trips, according to data posted on the Department of Tourism’s website Monday.
In September, the Immigration Bureau tallied 1,191,755 arrivals at all checkpoints — overland, sea and air excluding border pass holders and expatriate Thais.
Based on current data, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports is forecasting a year-end performance of 15.34 million arrivals.

BANGKOK, 6 October 2010 – The Cabinet yesterday approved the promotion of Department of Physical Education director-general, Sombat Kurupan, as the new Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ permanent-secretary.
Mr Sombat, who was the Department of Physical Education director-general, replaces Arttachai Burakamkovit, who retired 30 September.

BANGKOK, 5 October 2010 – Minister of Tourism and Sports, Chumpol Silapa-archa, stated Monday that the country’s tourism sector will gradually return to normal after being hard hit by the political turmoil last May.

BANGKOK, 29 September 2010 – International visitors declined 2.17% during the second quarter of the year, while domestic travel leaped 29.61%, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ official statistics released Tuesday.
Thailand earned Bt126.22 billion from international and domestic tourists during the second quarter of this year,
The ministry released its official findings on tourist arrivals, length of stay, daily spending and tourism revenue for the second quarter and also the first half of the year at the close of yesterday’s meeting of the Support, Supervise and Follow-up Committee on Tourism Statistics and Revenue Conduct chaired by the ministry’s deputy permanent secretary, Thanittha Savetsila Maneechote.

BANGKOK, 28 September 2010 – More international film companies are shooting movies on location in Thailand, according to a report issued by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Monday.
The ministry announced that so far 377 movies, TV shows, commercials and documentaries have been shot in Thailand compared with 306 productions, January to August, last year.

BANGKOK, 22 September 2010 – Thailand’s tourist arrivals gained 13.16% during the first eight months of the year reaching 10,018,262 trips, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported Tuesday.
The ministry was reporting on tourist arrivals, nationwide, including overland trips monitored at checkpoints with Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. The results were compared with data for January to August 2009 that recorded 8,853,259 trips.
Chiang Mai’s convention centre hits fiscal snags

BANGKOK, 13 September 2010 – A mega project to give Chiang Mai a Bt1.8 billion convention centre is falling behind even its own revised schedule and it is now likely that it will exceed its budget by at least Bt1 billion, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Chumpol Silapa-Archa , admitted during a site inspection, last Thursday.
The cost overrun represents a Bt59% increase over the original Bt1.8 billion budget forcing ministry officials to spend considerable time at the inspection sessions studying ways to cut costs.

BANGKOK, 6 September, 2010 – Bangkokians feel threatened by political unrest and believe the uncertainties will continue to damage tourism, according to a recent survey by a Bangkok University poll released last week.
The Bangkok University Research Institute (Bangkok Poll) issued details of the survey “Is Bangkok Ready for the high season?” based on interviews with 1,237 city residents aged over 18. Details of the survey were released by National News Bureau of Thailand last Friday.
