Cruise centre hires Kingsmen

SINGAPORE 9 January 2018 – Singapore Cruise Centre has appointed Kingsmen OoH-media Pte Ltd as its exclusive out-of-home media and advertising agency with effect 1 February 2018.

Kingsmen’s contract will cover media and advertising at SCC’s terminals at HarbourFront, Tanah Merah and Pasir Panjang.

SCC said Kingsmen’s appointment will enable it to use the latest digital technologies to reach out to and engage terminal users and also carry out integrated marketing programmes for its advertisers. Read more

DENPASAR, 20 December 2017: Indonesia has launched a “10 New Bali’s” campaign  that plays on the island’s popularity while suggesting travellers go elsewhere.

Recognising that for many travellers Indonesia is Bali, the latest national campaign suggests there are 10 Indonesian destinations beyond Bali that are equally attractive.

According to, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, explains the “10 New Bali’s” strategy as the equivalent of not putting all your “tourism eggs in one basket.” Read more

TAT promotes neighbourly travel

BANGKOK, 25 September, 2017 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand is hosting Bangkok-based media on a five-day fam trip this week to promote Bangkok as a hub to visit Laos, North Thailand and Myanmar.

Nothing new about the concept of two or three- country travel itineraries. Tour operators have been successfully selling Bangkok as a gateway to Laos and Myanmar for decades.

However, while the starting point remains the Bangkok hub of Suvarnabhumi Airport, the difference this time round is an itinerary that misses the capital cities of Myanmar and Laos concentrating on Mandalay in Myanmar, Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city in the north and Luang Prabang in Laos. Island sues media outlet

BANGKOK, 11 July 2017: Thai officials have filed criminal charges against a news website for branding the popular beach destination of Koh Tao “Death Island” in reports about a string of tourist fatalities.

Koh Tao’s reputation as a tropical paradise was first sullied in 2014 when two British backpackers were brutally murdered on one of its white-sand beaches.

A series of other foreign tourist deaths have fuelled press coverage about the island’s ‘dark side,’ with allegations of local mafia and corrupt police colluding to cover up murders. Read more

Phuket Gazette ends print edition

PHUKET, 15 May 2017: Phuket Gazette will stop publishing its hard copy newspaper at the end of May and will instead concentrate on its online news service in cooperation with the Nation.

The Nation recently expanded its online presence by closing a deal to take over which was part of a wider plan to consolidate its strengths in online news services and media. Read more

Nat Geo expands travel media

WASHINGTON, 3 May 2017: Coming off a record 2016 and posting double-digit growth first quarter 2017, National Geographic Travel announces additional global expansion plans for Europe and Asia.

It intends to expand travel-related media offerings to include the launch of a weekly two-hour travel programming block, the appointment of new executives, a special luxury edition of National Geographic Traveller magazine and the development of the new National Geographic Travel Lab.

“National Geographic is leveraging the power of our brand to reinvigorate and reinvent our ancillary businesses … our travel business is a key piece of that,” said National Geographic Partners CEO Declan Moore. Read more

Surprise backer for UNWTO candidate

BANGKOK, 12 April 2017: Travel trade media rarely endorses candidates vying for top level tourism appointments, but TravelIndex founder and director, Bernard Metzger, made an exception, Tuesday, by backing a candidate from the Seychelles to take over as the new secretary general of UNWTO.

Metzer heaped abundant praise on Alain St Ange, the candidate from the Seychelles, one of seven contesting the May elections to head the UNWTO. Other candidates hail from Armenia, Brazil, Columbia, Georgia, South Korea and Zimbabwe.

In his letter posted to a global readership of travel executives, Metzger said of the Seychelles hopeful, who has headed Seychelles tourism and held ministerial posts: “I am one of your greatest supporters and few in your position have achieved so much for world tourism.” Read more

Philippines a hard sell

MANILA, 24 March 2017: The Philippines tourism secretary urged the media, Wednesday, to “tone down” cover of President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly drug war, complaining that reports on extrajudicial killings were scaring away foreigners.

On a trip to Thailand accompanying Duterte, Tourism Secretary, Wanda Teo, insisted the Philippines was a safe destination, but said journalists were making the country a hard sell because of their focus on the killings.

“Help us because you know, it’s really difficult for me to sell the Philippines, especially when extrajudicial killings becomes the topic,” Teo told Filipino reporters following the Duterte entourage. Read more

Zenith wins STB media account

The appointment was based on an open Request for Proposal (RFP) for a global media planning and buying agency last October.

Media told to cough up and pay

SINGAPORE, 5 January 2017: ASEAN’s travel community will celebrate the 50 anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations during the up coming ASEAN Travel Mart that opens in Singapore, 18 January.

To kick-off the milestone year, Singapore is hosting the 36th ASEAN Tourism Forum, 18 to 20 January.

Despite the importance of the event, Singapore has virtually ended the long tradition of hosting international media. Read more
