AVANI Fares resort to open 2019

BANGKOK, 24 August 2017: AVANI Hotels & Resorts announced, this week, the development of its first resort in the Maldives.

AVANI Fares Maldives Resort will be located on Fares Island in the Baa Atoll and is scheduled to open in Q4 2019.

Construction is underway on an untouched, private 12.4 hectare island, a 45-minute transfer by sea plane from Male and 30 minutes by speedboat from the recently opened domestic airport on Baa Atoll. Read more

SINGAPORE, 23 August 2017: Mercure Maldives Kooddoo welcomed its first guests, 20 August, at its Gaafu Alifu Atoll island location.

Situated adjacent to Kooddoo domestic airport, the hotel is the first beachfront property that is directly accessible via a 55-minute flight from Male without the need for a speedboat transfer.

Thai AirAsia to fly Maldives

BANGKOK, 16 June 2017: Thai AirAsia will launch flights connecting Bangkok to Maldives starting 11 August, making it the first low-cost airline in Thailand to serve the upscale beach resort destination.

The airline’s commercial director, Santisuk Klongchaiya, said the perception of the Maldives focused on upscale resorts and  luxury travellers, but  Thai AirAsia will launch a service that will appeal to all travellers. Read more

Mövenpick signs first hotel in Maldives

BANGKOK, 28 April 2017: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement to manage its first resort in the Maldives.

The planned 105-unit resort, Mӧvenpick Resort & Spa Kuredhivaru Maldives, will be situated on the remote Kuredhivaru Island in Noonu Atoll in the northern part of the Maldives. It is scheduled to open during the second quarter of 2018.

The contemporary tropical resort will have 33 beach villas and 72 over water villas. Read more

Centara inks Maldives contract

BANGKOK, 7 April 2017: Centara Hotels & Resorts signed   a new hotel management agreement for its fourth beach resort under the Centara umbrella in the Maldives – Centara Grand Muthaafushi Resort & Spa Maldives.

The signing ceremony took place between Centara Hotels & Resorts and Muthaafushi Orient Investments Limited, and Well Land Investment PVT LTD.

Under the agreement, Centara Hotels & Resorts will manage and operate Centara Grand Muthaafushi Resort & Spa Maldives, a new five-star resort in the Southwest portion of Baa Atoll. Read more

A sub for two sails to the Maldives

SINGAPORE, 30 March 2017: Luxury submarine trips for two are heading for the clear waters of Maldives later this year.

Ocean Group, a specialist promoting dive and water sports experiences, says it will offer submarine trips in the Maldives through partner DeepFlight Adventures.

The first ever three-man submarine (pilot plus two passengers) will be operated by DeepFlight Adventures later this year at a luxury resort in the Maldives, where the current underwater experience is limited to scuba and snorkel. Read more

IHG to manage HPL Maldives property

SINGAPORE, 22 September 2016: InterContinental Hotels Group has signed a management agreement with Hotel Properties Limited to open a new InterContinental resort on the island of Maamunagau in the Maldives.

The 83-room InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort will mark the brand’s entry into the Maldives when it opens.

This is the third resort that IHG has in partnership with HPL. The Singapore-based property owner and developer also owns Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives and Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu. Read more

Maldives accuses VP of treason

COLOMBO, 23 July 2015: The Maldives parliament has sacked the country’s vice-president and accused him of treason, as international concern mounts over the state of democracy on the honeymoon islands.

This latest twist will dent tourist confidence, the country’s largest source of foreign exchange earnings.

Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday evening to oust Mohamed Jameel, who was the running mate of President Abdulla Yameen in a controversial 2013 election but has now fallen out with him.

Veteran hotelier and Loama Resort’s general manager, Andres Rubio said: “We are creating a place of hospitality … but we add art, culture and heritage to the mix.

“We have established the Maldives’ first gallery of contemporary Maldivian art, Loama Art Gallery, in an over-water pavilion near the resort’s main arrival pier and with the blessing of the National Art Gallery of Maldives in Male.”
