Laos rethinks rail project

BANGKOK, 9 November 2010 – The Lao government will cancel a joint venture project with Thailand to extend the Nong Khai rail track into the capital city Vientiane, Thai officials confirmed Monday.

Lao government officials reason the Thai-Lao rail extension will duplicate a high speed train project between China and Thailand that passes through Laos.

Private company hits a bus snag

BANGKOK, 22 October 2010 – A Nakhon Phanom-based company will not be able to operate an international bus service to neighbouring Laos and Vietnam due to a Ministry of Transport rule that reserves international bus services to state enterprise companies.

The company announced, earlier this month, that it was ready to start a service once the third Mekong bridge, 6 km north of Nakhon Phanom, opens late next year. However, days after the announcement the company admitted it faced opposition from the Ministry of Transport.

New booking site focuses on Lao SMEs

BANGKOK, 15 October 2010 –CyberServ Company launched a new travel booking website www.LaoBooking.com, earlier this week that will drive business to SME enterprises in Laos.

The site will feature a hotel booking service, travel packages, car rental services, travel information and a customer care service which will allow customer to gain assistance online 24 hours a day.

Colonial-style hotel opens in LP

BANGKOK, 5 October 2010 – French owned Mekong Cruises will open a five-star colonial-style hotel, The Luang Say Residence near Luang Prabang World heritage town in February 2011, the group reported Monday.

The hotel will soft launch 15 December but will not be fully operational until February 2011.

Thailand and Laos mull Buddhist circuit

BANGKOK, 9 September,  2010—Thailand and Laos will jointly promote Buddhist circuits linking northeastern Thailand and various regions in Lao PDR and focus on Buddhism and cultural heritage in the two countries officials announced, earlier this week.

About 80 delegates from Thailand and Lao PDR representing government offices related to tourism, travel entrepreneurs and media met in Vientiane to discuss a mutual initiative.

Vientiane rail track on the way

NONGKHAI, 2 September, 2010 — Construction of a railway line from Tha Na Laeng near the Thai-Lao border, adjacent to Thailand’s Nong Khai province, to Vientiane city is expected to begin this December, railway officials confirmed Friday.

The project will eventually connect Vientiane City to the main Bangkok-Nong Khai line, but will take three years to complete

Lao town spruces up

BANGKOK 14 June, 2010 — Savannakhet provincial authorities will inject 30 billion kip to restore the town’s old quarter, in a bid to draw tourists travelling in Northeast Thailand to cross the river and explore the Lao town.

The town also hopes the upgrade will encourage travellers, who transit the country from Thailand to Vietnam on the east-west corridor road, to spend more time in Savannakhet.

According to the Vientiane Times, deputy provincial governor, Souphanh Keomixay, said most of the funding would be used to improve roads, parks and give the river embankment a facelift. Read more

Mekong bridge hits snag
