Chinese tap lucrative Halal market

DUBAI, 21 September 2017: Standing behind her stall at a Dubai exhibition centre, Dai Dong He offered expo visitors what looked like carefully wrapped biscuits or chocolates.

“This is dry beef, beef snacks,” said Dai, general manager of Anhui Central Asia Food Co., one of eight Chinese firms from Anhui Province displaying products at Halal Expo Dubai 2017.

Dubai is hosting the show for the ninth year running, with the Gulf emirate positioning itself as a major hub for the halal industry, a booming USD3 trillion market for goods and services that are permissible under Islamic law. Read more

Halal food moves in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, 25 July 2017: Cambodia will cooperate with Thailand and Malaysia to establish halal standards to cater to the rising number of Muslim travellers visiting Cambodia, especially from the Middle East.

Khmer Times quoted Commerce Secretary of State, Mao Thora, saying there were many more Muslim travellers  visiting the country so it was important to introduce a halal standard.

“We will learn from Thailand and Malaysia to bring halal standards to Cambodia soon,” the minister said. Read more

BANGKOK, 21 March 2017: From hotels with segregated swimming pools to jelly made from seaweed instead of pig bones, Buddhist Thailand is chasing halal gold as it welcomes Muslim visitors and touts its wares to the Islamic world.

Inside the cavernous dining hall of the five-star Al Meroz hotel in a Muslim suburb of Bangkok, an elderly man with a wispy beard recites verses of the Koran as a nervous-looking groom awaits the arrival of his bride.

The young man bursts into a smile as his soon-to-be wife appears, clad in a brilliant white dress with matching headscarf. Read more

Cambodia seeks more Muslim travellers

PHNOM PENH, 2 February 2017: Thailand will support Cambodia efforts to introduce more Halal food production in the country that should help it attract more Muslim tourists.

Thailand has promised to support with seminars and other programmes that will help to put in place more Halal food restaurants and support Cambodia in its efforts to set up a Halal standard.

Agence Kampuchea Presse identified discussions between Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Royal Thai Embassy in Cambodia, Darm Boontham, and Cambodia’ Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak, held on Monday. Read more

Pattaya taps Muslim travel market

PATTAYA, 10 August 2016: Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration aims to promote Pattaya as a Halal food destination to attract more Muslim tourists from ASEAN.

DASTA’s Office of Designated Area 3 (Pattaya City and Vicinity) acting managing director, Thiti Chantaengphol, said DASTA will cooperate with the Nern Plub Wan community in Nong Prue municipality to develop the community into a centre of halal food suppliers for the Pattaya area.

“We aim to tap visitors from ASEAN and the Middle East, especially  Indonesians,” he said. Read more

Cambodia takes Halal food on board

PHNOM PENH, 17 June 2016: Cambodia will issue a draft sub-decree on halal food certification to attract  more Muslim tourists and investors.

Khmer Times quoted Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak saying the ministry was in last stages of finalising a sub-decree, which would then be presented to the Council of Ministers for approval.

The halal food certification sub-decree has been under study for some time, according to Sos Mou Sine, vice president of the Cambodia Muslim Development Foundation. Read more

Malaysia closes Rayani Air

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 June 2016: Rayani Air, Malaysia’s first Islamic-compliant airline, has been shut down, regulators said Monday, months after it was suspended from flying for breaching aviation regulations.

The carrier launched only in December with Muslim flight crew wearing the hijab, while non-Muslim members were forbidden from wearing revealing clothing. In-flight meals were completely halal and alcohol consumption banned.

But after an “investigation into the administration and safety audit” of the airline, the Department of Aviation (DCA) said it has revoked Rayani’s Air Operator Certificate. Read more

Halal economy grows

DUBAI, 8 October 2015: The halal economy is set to grow as the world’s Muslim population expands and more products are certified to comply with Islamic sharia law, experts said on Tuesday.

The range of halal products, from goods not containing pork or alcohol to financial and tourism services, is rising as the global Muslim population grows.

“They are growing because we are increasing by 2.5% to 3% every year. Islam is the fastest growing religion,” said Muhammad Chaudry, president of the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America.

Halal foodies get an app

SINGAPORE, 9 January 2015: A Singapore-based company on Wednesday launched a mobile application that enables Muslim foodies and travellers to share halal restaurant discoveries around the world.

The free “HalalTrip” app, available for Apple iOS and Android devices, enables users to take and upload photos of halal dishes, write comments and share them through social media.

Clicking on a photo gives details about the dish as well as the location of the restaurant. The app, which has English and Arabic interfaces, also uses a traveller’s location to display photos of halal dishes served in nearby restaurants. Read more
