Guangzhou to host World Routes 2018

BARCELONA, 2 October 2017: The annual World Routes forum was officially handed over to next year’s host city, Guangzhou, at the closing ceremony in Barcelona late last week.

World Routes brings together airlines, airports and destinations to plan and negotiate future air services.

Guangzhou, an economic hub on the Pearl River in Guangdong Province, South China, often promoted alongside Hong Kong and Macau will host the event in 2018. Read more

Skift skips into Singapore

SINGAPORE, 29 September 2017: Singapore will host the first ever Skift Forum Asia edition in 2018, according to the Singapore Tourist Board.

Skift Inc a US-based business information company linked to travel and STB made the announcement, Wednesday, during the Skift Global Forum in New York City.

This marks the first time that the Skift Global Forum, dubbed the “TED of travel” by the industry, will take place in Asia with Singapore as the home to this inaugural edition. Read more

CHIANG MAI, 15 June 2017: Calling tourism a heart-to-heart business Thailand’s Minster of Tourism and Sports, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, is counting on communities to spread tourism dollars across the country.

The minister was the opening speaker at Thailand Travel Mart’s Tourism Trend Talk Forum, Wednesday, hosted in Chiang Mai.

The forum addressed the challenges of community-based tourism, food tourism and issues linked to safety. Read more

Lifetime vocation attending travel shows

BANGKOK, 5 June 2017: June is a reminder that Asia’s travel trade scene is packed with events that will change how you do business, talk fests that entertain and a smattering of the old fashioned travel shows that motor on despite disruptive technology.

This week, the Mekong Tourism Forum convenes in Luang Prabang, a World Heritage town and a premier destination driving tourism to Laos. It is six years since the forum was last held in Laos when it convened in Pakse.

Many of the faces have changed, but most of the core issues have not.  At the MTF 2011 in Pakse organisers rolled out the theme, “Destination Mekong: The Making of a Star,” while this year the focus is on “Prosper with Purpose”. Following each event the theme is deposited in a box appropriately named “been there done that”. Read more

Thailand to host UNWTO food forum

BANGKOK, 15 May 2017: Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports signed an agreement to host the fourth edition of UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in Bangkok next year.

The ministry’s permanent secretary, Pongpanu Svetarundra, inked the agreement last week with UNWTO general secretary, Taleb Rifai, during the third UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in San Sebastian, Spain.

The permanent secretary said: “Hosting the event will help to boost Thailand’s gastronomy tourism and promote the country’s food …the forum will also provide a theoretical academic discussion, knowledge exchange with food professionals and workshop in food resources to touch and experience way of life conveying to food menus.” Read more

MTF draws top keynote speaker

Routes Asia 2018 heads for Brisbane

OKINAWA, 22 March 2017: Routes Asia announced at the close of its Okinawa event Monday that Brisbane, Australia, would host  the 2018  Routes Asia conference.

The event brings together airlines, airports and stakeholders to discuss air service to, from and within Asia-Pacific.

A consortium comprising of Brisbane Airport Corporation, Brisbane Marketing, Tourism Australia, Tourism Events Queensland and Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre will underwrite the 2018 event. Read more

Mekong messages flow to Berlin

BANGKOK, 10 January 2017: Mekong Tourism is poised to announce a partnership with ITB, the world’s largest tourism tradeshow organiser, that will lift the profile of the Mekong Region in Asia and Europe.

Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office executive director, Jens Thranehart, in a New Year message to stakeholders and Mekong Region tourism supporters, said the partnership had taken two years to put together.

The partnership will open the door for the MTCO to secure a slot at the ITB Berlin and possibly ITB Asia to showcase what Thranehart described as a “mini Mekong Tourism Forum”. Read more

India needs to tap tourism potential

NEW DELHI, 18 November 2016: India’s government must put tourism at the heart of its economic agenda and deliver on its manifesto promise of 2014, according to Tourism & Travel Council president and CEO David Scowsill.

Speaking at the recent Hotel Investment Forum India in Mumbai, Scowsill highlighted that India’s Travel & Tourism sector has extraordinary potential and is forecast to grow by 7.5% per annum over the next decade.

But growth remains largely untapped due to a lack of a co-ordinated approach to tourism policies. Read more

TTF rolls out invite to 2017 event

BANGKOK, 18 November 2016: Thailand Tourism Forum, an influential annual gathering of top hotel industry professionals in the Thai capital, will be held Monday 23 January, 2017, at the InterContinental Hotel Bangkok.

Now in its sixth year, TTF is organised by Thailand’s American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and C9 Hotelworks with support from InterContinental Hotel Group.
