Surprise backer for UNWTO candidate

BANGKOK, 12 April 2017: Travel trade media rarely endorses candidates vying for top level tourism appointments, but TravelIndex founder and director, Bernard Metzger, made an exception, Tuesday, by backing a candidate from the Seychelles to take over as the new secretary general of UNWTO.

Metzer heaped abundant praise on Alain St Ange, the candidate from the Seychelles, one of seven contesting the May elections to head the UNWTO. Other candidates hail from Armenia, Brazil, Columbia, Georgia, South Korea and Zimbabwe.

In his letter posted to a global readership of travel executives, Metzger said of the Seychelles hopeful, who has headed Seychelles tourism and held ministerial posts: “I am one of your greatest supporters and few in your position have achieved so much for world tourism.” Read more

Vichit wins ATTA election

BANGKOK, 31 March 2017: Vichit Prakobgosol was elected the 37th president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents for a two-year term (2017 to 2018) in a landslide victory at the annual general meeting, Thursday.

Vichit won the election with 395 votes from a total of 480 registered members, while the only other candidate, incumbent president Charoen Wangananont, garnered just 79 votes. It was a stunning loss and a first for an ATTA president running for a second term. There were six void ballots.

ATTA president fights for second term

BANGKOK, 28 March 2017: Association of Thai Travel Agents will elect its 37th president and committee, 30 March, for a two-year term.

The election will take place at Napalai Ballroom, Dusit Thani Bangkok, 1030 to 1330, this Thursday.

There are two candidates; Charoen Wangananont, who is seeking his second term and challenger, Vichit Prakobgosol. Both have named their teams on the election tickets and have presented their policies in emails sent to members. The voting is likely to be a close call as both candidates command strong support from within the membership, albeit from different segments of the tourism industry. Read more

Trumplash hits travel

LONDON, 24 November 2016: Muslims are staying away from the US in droves following the election of Donald Trump.

During 14 days since the US presidential election, searches for US-bound flights from Arab countries were down by a staggering 70% compared to October’s numbers, reports Cheap Flights Finder.

According to the flights meta-search site Muslim travellers are heading for the UK, Turkey, and Malaysia, all of which are seeing spikes in CheapFlightsFinder.com searches originating from primarily Islamic countries. Read more

ATTA: Charoen wins by wide margin

BANGKOK, 1 April 2015: Charoen Wangananont was elected 36th president of Association of Thai Travel Agents for a two-year term (2015 to 2016)  at the annual general meeting, Tuesday.

Charoen won the election with 409 votes from 693 registered members, while the only other candidate, Vichit Prakobgosol, gained 281 votes. There were two void ballots and one no vote.

Charoen replaces the former president, Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, who served two terms; 2011 to 2012 and 2013 and 2014,  the maximum possible under association rules.

ATTA candidates on election trail

BANGKOK, 27 February 2015: Association of Thai Travel Agents will elect its 36th president and committee on 31 March for a two-year term.

The election will take place at Napalai Ballroom, Dusit Thani Bangkok 1000 to 1300.

The current president Sisdivachr Cheewarattaporn, who has served two terms; 2011 to 2012 and 2013 to 2014, will step down.
