Centara joint venture with Dubai group

BANGKOK, 3 October 2017:  UAE-based master developer Nakheel and  Centara Hotels and Resorts, Monday, concluded the formation of a joint venture company and signed a management agreement for their 600-room beachfront resort and waterpark at Dubai’s Deira Islands.

The joint venture, cemented by Nakheel Chairman, Ali Rashid Lootah, and Centara Chairman of the Board, Suthikiati Chirathivat, at a signing ceremony at Centara’s headquarters in Bangkok, will deliver a family lifestyle destination at Deira Islands, Nakheel’s new, 15.3 sq km waterfront city.

The resort will also be managed by Centara, a group that already musters over 14,000 room keys across 67 hotels and resorts in Asia and the Middle East. Read more

Dubai unveils mega projects

DUBAI, 14 September 2017: Property developers in Dubai showcased new multi-billion-dollar mega-projects on Monday despite falling prices, in the hope of stimulating demand and helping to end a three-year market downturn.

Exhibitors at the three-day Cityscape Global showed off models of high-end skyscrapers and even “Floating Venice”, a resort complete with underwater suites.

The USD680 million Venice development 4 km (2.5 miles) off Dubai will have capacity of 3,000 visitors. Read more

Emirates launches Hanoi service

DUBAI, UAE, 6 July 2017: Emirates airline commenced daily direct flights from Dubai to Hanoi, Vietnam, 1 July, providing Emirates’ passengers from Dubai and across Europe faster travelling times to Vietnam.

Passengers travelling to Hanoi on Emirates will no longer need to stop in Yangon, saving approximately two hours and 30 minutes of travel time.

The first direct flight EK394 from Dubai departed at 0330 and arrived at Noi Bai International Airport at 1305 local time. Read more

First robotic cop joins Dubai police

DUBAI, 6 June 2017: After bringing in Lamborghinis and Ferraris to patrol roads, Dubai police have enrolled a robotic officer, the first in a unit that aims to make up a quarter of the force by 2030.

The robotic cop stood to attention Wednesday night at the foot of Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, as tourists and passersby snapped selfie souvenir photos by its side.

Wearing a police cap and moving on wheels, the robot features a computer touch-screen on its chest that can be used to report a crime or inquire about speeding tickets. Read more

Expo 2020 Dubai plans unfold

ABU DHABI, UAE, 4 April 2017: Alpin Limited has been appointed the commissioning authority for the 2020 World Expo, which will take place in Dubai.

Expo 2020 Dubai is expected to attract 180 nations and 25 million visitors, across a six-month period.

Alpin’s primary objective is to work with the organisers to integrate these three sub-themes into the urban design, construction, operations and legacy, while also ensuring the assets have a life after the expo closes. Read more

Emirates expands flights in ASEAN

DUBAI, 22 February 2017: Emirates will begin daily services to Phnom Penh, 1 July, by extending its Yangon service  to the Cambodian capital.

The service will use a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a two-class configuration.

On the same day Emirates will delink Hanoi from its Dubai-Yangon service, serving the Vietnamese capital with its own nonstop service out of  Dubai. Read more

Donald swings golf in Dubai

DUBAI, 20 February 2017: The American president’s sons opened the Trump International Golf Club Saturday as Dubai hosted the first foreign launch of a venue bearing Donald Trump’s name since he took office.

The Trump International Golf Club, developed in the glitzy Gulf city state by luxury real estate firm DAMAC Properties, was inaugurated by the billionaire’s sons Eric and Donald Jr.

The event marks the Trump Organisation’s first public overseas launch since the president’s 20 January inauguration. Read more

Dubai tourism grows 5%

DUBAI, 8 February 2017: Dubai welcomed a record 14.9 million visitors in 2016, the city’s tourism department said, Tuesday, as the Gulf emirate capitalised on its reputed safety in a region wracked by turmoil.

The city-state, one of seven sheikhdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates, aims to attract 20 million visitors annually by 2020 when it hosts the global trade fair Expo 2020.

As turmoil hits traditional tourism destinations in the Middle East and North Africa, Dubai has benefitted from its reputation as a safe haven for tourism and business. Read more

Dubai canal a boost for tourism

DUBAI, 14 November 2016: Dubai inaugurated a new canal last week after a three-year construction project costing USD735 million, in a fresh boost for tourism and commerce in the booming Gulf city-state.

The Dubai Water Canal creates a 6.4-kilometre (four-mile) waterfront in the area running from the city’s growing Business Bay commercial district to the Gulf.

The waterway, between 80 and 120 metres (260 to 400 feet) in width, will “add a unique tourist and commercial showpiece” to the city, said the emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) chief, Mattar al-Tayer. Read more

UAE eases visas for Chinese

DUBAI, 5 September 2016: Chinese visitors to the United Arab Emirates will now be granted visas on arrival, the Gulf state’s prime minister announced, Sunday, in a new bid to boost tourism.

China, the world’s second-largest economy, has a burgeoning and increasingly prosperous middle class that is travelling abroad in numbers greater than ever before.

“We have approved a decision to grant visas on arrival at the country’s airports to visitors from the Republic of China,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who is also the ruler of Dubai. Read more
