Qatar buys LATAM stake

SANTIAGO, 30 December 2016: Qatar Airways bought a 10% stake Wednesday in LATAM, the largest airline in Latin America, the Chilean-Brazilian company said.

The investment, first announced last July, amounts to 60.8 million shares at a price of USD10 each, LATAM said in a statement.

The airline — the product of a 2012 merger between Chile’s LAN and Brazil’s TAM — said Qatar’s arrival as a stakeholder “represents a unique opportunity to develop a long-term relationship and explore new opportunities to connect with Asia and the Middle East”. Read more

HNA buys stake in Brazilian airline

SHANGHAI, 5 August 2016: Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines has completed a USD450-million purchase of nearly a quarter stake in Brazil’s third largest airline Azul, according to a statement issued Thursday, as its parent HNA embarks on an overseas investment binge.

The deal, originally announced in November, gives Hainan Airlines a 23.7% stake in Azul, making the Chinese company the Brazilian firm’s single largest shareholder, the statement said.

“We view Azul as a strong and lasting partner for HNA to explore further expansion and capital investment in Latin America,” Adam Tan, chief executive of Hainan Airlines’ parent HNA Group, said in the statement. Read more
