Wood back in Asia Skål

BANGKOK, 6 September 2017: Skål Club Bangkok’s PR director, Andrew Wood, has been assigned the role of vice president for Skål’s Southeast Asia board.

An long-time member and supporter of Skål, an association for travel industry executives worldwide, Wood served on the Southeast Asia board as vice president, 2009 to 2010.

He was also a key figure in various bids to bring the Skål International Congress to Thailand and a former president of the Bangkok club. Read more

ASIA DMC extends footprint

HANOI, 29 August 2017: Vietnam-based ASIA DMC will launch a North American sales office based in Los Angeles headed by American born, Derek Ong.

Ong will assume the role of director of sales and marketing for ASIA DMC in the US.

With a background of more than 14 selling travel in Southeast Asia with leading travel firms, Ong will introduce ASIA DMC’s products and services to US homeland. Read more

Qatar CEO to chair IATA

DOHA, Qatar, 29 August 2017: Qatar Airways Group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, has been elected chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Air Transport Association, effective June 2018.

The rotating one-year term will commence at the close of IATA’s 2018 Annual General Meeting in Sydney and will continue until the end of the 2019 AGM.

Al Baker will succeed current IATA BoG chairman, Goh Choon Phong, chief executive officer of Singapore Airlines. Read more

PATA members get to save USD900 for a report that has a USD5,999 price tag for 12 monthly editions.

Hotelier on the move

BANGKOK, 18 August 2017: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has appointed Michel Checoury as its new chief financial officer (CFO).

He joins the Mövenpick leadership team from Aman Resorts where he was CFO since 2014, responsible for the finances at 31 properties in 19 countries.

He will be responsible for aligning strategic planning, the ongoing implementation of Mövenpick’s successful business model and supporting all finance-related decisions and functions.  Read more

China sales go tabletop

BANGKOK, 18 August 2017: Thai Hotels Association is inviting members to join a Hotels Meet Local Agents Chinese Speaking Marketplace, 1330 to 1930, 22 September.

The sales event will be held at Chaturathit and Parichart rooms, Golden Tulip Sovereign Hotel Bangkok.

THA is cooperating with the Association of Thai Travel Agents to organise the programme, which will provide opportunities for hotel and tour operators to negotiate business and exchange knowledge at tabletop sessions. Read more

Wharf names Marco Polo GM

HONG KONG, 10 August 2017: Wharf Hotels has appointed Marcel Sawyere as general manager of Marco Polo Lingnan Tiandi Foshan, in China.

A veteran hotelier with a wealth of experience spanning over 34 years, Sawyere has held leadership roles in hospitality across Asia Pacific.

He was general manager of Vinpearl Golf and Resort in Vietnam following management roles with Fairmont Hotels, Dusit International in Thailand and Wanda Hotels and Resorts in China. Read more

JacTravel CEO calls it a day

LONDON, 9 August 2017: JacTravel’s CEO, Terry Williamson, has announced that he will be leaving JacTravel following the completion of the sale of the company to Webjet.

The sale is scheduled to be completed officially at the end of this month.

Centara names Trat manager

TRAT, 7 August 2017: Centara Hotels & Resorts, announced, Friday, the appointment of Thatthep (Kevin) Thamrongwarasart as resort manager of the group’s beach resort in Trat, the far south east province on the Gulf of Thailand.

He has worked for more than 15 years in hotel management. Prior to join Centara he held a senior management position at Sofitel So Bangkok.

Thatthep graduated with a bachelor’s degree in general management from Bangkok University and has a diploma in travel and tourism from Cavendish College London. Read more
