Cachet stamps footprint in Phuket sand

BANGKOK, 16 October 2017: A relatively new player in the hotel management game, Cachet Hospitality Group, will manage its first property in Thailand on Nai Yang Beach on the northwest coast of Phuket.

The resort will be branded Cachet Resort Dewa and have 128 rooms when the “conversion property” comes under its management 16 December.

The property is owned by R&B Partners Co Ltd, a Phuket-based property management company headed by Swedish entrepreneur and long-term Phuket expatriate resident, Lars Ydmark, who has 30 years experience in the hospitality industry mainly in Thailand. Read more

BANGKOK, 12 October 2017: Southeast Asia’s real estate love affair between property developers and hotel brands is morphing into a feeding frenzy, according to C9 Hotelworks’ new SE Asia focused Hotel Residences Market Trends.

With nearly 100 mainstream hotel residence projects and over 21,000 units completed, the next three years will see sector boldly expanding into new territory.

The reports states that between 2018 and 2020 new completed units will represent a massive 83% increase over existing supply. Read more

Smoking on the beach banned

BANGKOK , 12 October 2017: Hua Hin’s municipal “beach police” will target smokers in a move to clean up the resort’s beaches as a new rule banning smoking at 20 beaches, nationwide, comes into effect 1 November.

Thailand’s Thai language daily, Thai Rath, broke the story saying Hua Hin’s city authorities would introduce a THB2,000 fine on beach goers who throw their cigarette butts on the seashore.

A representative of the Hua Hin authority said a 2,000 baht fine would be reasonable for smokers caught puffing on beaches, next month. The law stipulates the fine should not exceed THB100,000. Read more

ONYX teams up with Yoo

BANGKOK, 11 October 2017:  ONYX Hospitality Group has sealed an agreement with UK-based YOO Hotels & Resorts to manage and develop the YOO Collection and Yoo2 hotel brands across Asia.

ONYX Hospitality Group role will be to introduce the two brands in key city and resort destinations in Asia.

The first YOO Asia hotels to be developed will be in Phuket and Bali, both scheduled to open in 2019. Read more

Thai airlines increase flights

BANGKOK, 11 October 2017: Thai Airways International and Thai Smile Airways are taking the lead increasing  flights ahead of the royal cremation ceremony of His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej to assist domestic travellers.

Thai Airways International acting president, Usanee Sangsingkeo, said that due to the government’s decision to make 26 October a public holiday, the two airlines would increase flights to facilitate Thai mourners across the country to participate in His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s royal cremation ceremony.

Home sharing giant joins PATA

BANGKOK, 11 October  2017 – Airbnb has signalled its intention to work with Asia’s travel and hospitality by joining the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

Airbnb joins Pata as a member in the hospitality ranks effective this month.

Earlier TripAdvisor joined PATA and its head of destination marketing Asia Pacific, Sarah Mathews, is now chairperson of the association’s executive board. Read more

TAT issues Royal Cremation advisory

BANGKOK, 10 October 2017: The Royal Cremation Ceremony for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej is scheduled for 25 to 29 October.

Thursday, 26 October, is the Royal Cremation Day, and it has been declared a public holiday in Thailand by the Royal Thai Government to allow people to take part in paying a final tribute to the late King.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has issued the following recommendations to visitors to Thailand during this historic period. Read more

TAT shifts deputies sideways

BANGKOK, 9 October 2017: Tourism Authority of Thailand reshuffled six deputy governors and reinstated an advisor (grade 10) to an active role, 1 October.

The moves change their areas of responsibility, but without any explanation of why the TAT governor curated the moves.

There was plenty of speculation in the industry including suggestions the governor, who has another two years to go to complete his term wants it leave on a high note, while bolstering his performance score card. Read more

Bangkok ranks world’s top tourist capital

BANGKOK, 9 October 2017:  Bangkok topped Mastercard’s Global Destination Cities Index 2017, released last week,  on the sheer weight of its overnight tourist arrivals and tourism spend.

Of the 132 destinations featured, five of the top 10 places in the annual survey went to destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Bangkok has topped the chart for two years in a row. The latest report is based on the overnight stay head count and cross border spend in 2016. Read more
