Qantas deals downunder

BANGKOK, 4 December 2017: Qantas is offering special fares to Australia and New Zealand for economy and business travellers resident in Thailand until 15 December.

Qantas quotes the roundtrip deals inclusive of tax and surcharges.

The economy class fares lead off with a roundtrip fare to Perth with a change of plane in Singapore at THB16,645. Read more

Pattaya boat show draws a crowd

PATTAYA, 1 December 2017: The sixth Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show welcomed 4,554 visitors during its four-days mid November.

Identified as the Gulf of Thailand’s premier marine event, hosted annually at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, this year’s event delivered an extensive in-water display of global yacht brands as well as a full range of onshore exhibits.

At the close, the organisers confirmed the 7th Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will be hosted 29 November to 2 December, 2018, at Ocean Marina Yacht Club. Read more

Celebrity elephant kills owner

BANGKOK, 1 December 2017: An elephant that has starred in feature films and commercials crushed its owner to death in Thailand, zoo officials said Tuesday, sparking fresh debate over the kingdom’s animal tourism industry.

The accident took place Monday morning in the northern city of Chiang Mai, just after owner Somsak Riengngen unchained the five-tonne elephant Ekasit.

With a mahout, or handler, on his back, Ekasit took a few steps before reversing course and attacking 54-year-old Somsak, who was on the ground. Read more

ONYX names EVP operations

BANGKOK, 30 November 2017: ONYX Hospitality Group has appointed Craig Bond as executive vice president of operations.

Bond joins ONYX from Oakwood Asia-Pacific where he held the role of vice president of operations, overseeing the group’s portfolio across the region as well as supporting the opening pipeline.

Prior to joining Oakwood, he worked for Pan Pacific Hotels, Mirvac and Saville Hotel Group across Australia and the Oceania regions. Read more

Baring bums lands tourists in jail

BANGKOK, 30 November 2017: Two American tourists have been held for “inappropriate behaviour” after sharing photos of them baring their buttocks at a famous Bangkok temple, Thai police said Wednesday,

Thailand’s ruling junta is cracking down on insults to Buddhism, the country’s dominant religion.

The pair, Joseph and Travis Dasilva, both 38, uploaded pictures, 24 November of their bared backsides at Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn) to Instagram. Read more

Amadeus takes the lid off Thai travel.

BANGKOK, 29 November 2017: Thai traveller are open to sharing personal data if they can obtain a more personalised service or better price deal.

The findings released in an Amadeus study appear to go against the dominant growing distrust for sharing data of any sort that is often open to cyber attacks and hackers.

It was just one finding identified in the Amadeus publish report on Thai travellers titled “The Journey of Me Insights:  What Thai Travellers want”. Read more

PATA SKAL show Xmas spirit

BANGKOK, 29 November 2017: A joint PATA Thailand Chapter and SKAL Christmas charity event will be held on Tuesday, 19 December, at the Siam Kempinski Hotel, Bangkok.

The doors will open at 1200 for cocktails and networking, followed by a lengthy lunch and celebrations that usually wind up in the late afternoon.

Centara plots expansion

BANGKOK 27th November 2017: Thailand-based Centara Hotels and Resorts released details of a business plan that calls for the group to double revenue through inventory expansion over five years.

Centara identified three expansion strategies, Monday, starting with the group adding hotels and resorts through a combination of investments and management agreements.

It aims to be more prominent in Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean and Middle East, but will also expand its footprint in East Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. Read more

Boat show attracts big spenders

PATTAYA, 27 November 2017: The sixth edition of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show closed its doors  Sunday evening after a four-day festival of boating lifestyle.

Hosted at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports presided over the opening ceremony, just days before a Cabinet reshuffle saw her step down.

This year’s show featured a strong in-water display of global yacht brands and Thai built boats (pleasure and commercial), as well as a diverse range of onshore exhibitors. Read more
